Change has come (no matter who you voted for)

So our country has a new president, and "change" is upon us. This has been the longest presidential race in history with over 21 months of campaigning. It's amazing how passionate people can be about politics.

First there were the primaries where the parties themselves were divided. Passionate people picked a side. Then the parties chose their candidates and the people on the losing side had to realign those passions with their party's candidate.

Now half of the nation picked a candidate who didn't win and they are left with these passionate feelings but with no outlet for expressing them.

I would like to offer a suggestion. If you were a John McCain supporter, what were the issues that made you want to elect him as president. Personally I supported McCain because he was pro-life, and that is a topic about which I am extremely passionate. Not only is Obama pro-choice, but he is also in support of partial birth abortions and lowering the few regulations already in place for abortion in America today.

So, because my candidate "lost" should I be upset? Should I go around throwing my hands up in the air and pronouncing the doom of America?

Absolutely not! I respect the office of president. And, I don't think it's the president's sole responsibility to make America the country it is.

So, back to my original question. What should McCain supporters do with those stranded passions? Put them to good use by becoming involved in the issues. Are you against abortion? Volunteer at the pregnancy resource center in Trumann. Are you worried about how the economy will affect those less fortunate? Make a donation to the Salvation Army or take them your gently used clothing and other items. You'll get a tax break and help those in need. Do you worry about the war in Iraq? Get the addresses of local soldiers who are serving in Iraq and send them thank you notes and care packages.

No matter the issue, write your senators, congressman and state representatives letters. They are our leaders and need to hear from you.

Our nation is faced with some tough issues right now. Frankly, no matter which man is in the White House, those issues are still going to be hard to solve. What Barack Obama needs now is not our criticism or whining. He needs our support and our prayers.

America is not only as good as her president. She's only as good as her people.
