Specialization is for Insects

Posted Thursday, February 26, 2009, at 12:27 AM

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, anaylyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

- Robert Heinlein

I like this quote. This quote truly applies to all of us in some way or another. In my case, I'm most commonly referred to as police officer, cop, popo, and some other derogatory terms for law enforcement officer. I've put some thought into this and I guess in one facet of my life I am a cop. It's my job. It's my chosen profession. I attempt to perform my duties ethically and to the best of my ability. In actuality, however, Cop does not define Gary Henry Sr. Gary Henry Sr. defines cop. I am a good cop because I am a good person. I say this not full of conceit but full of certainty. It is my life experiences and upbringings that have made me who I am. I don't specialize in one area. I can do several of the things mentioned in the above quotation. I wear many hats. I'm a cop, an eagle scout, and a great dad. Those are some of my more worthy accomplishments. I strive to be a good person, a faithful husband, and basically a worthy individual in God and humanity's eyes. I must admit I don't do any one thing perfectionately. But I do strive to achieve perfection in all my endeavors. I have discovered that I can do about anything I put my mind to if I just try. I may not do it as well as others who do it more often than I. But I can do anything I try. This comes from my belief in myself and my will to actually try and not be afraid to fail. I've discovered if you try and fail that's better than never trying at all. At least it shows you have the fortitude to try. That's all someone can ask of you. Just have the will to try. Often you'll be pleasantly surprised. I guess the whole point of this randomly tangent entry is just to encourage folks to take that big step and just try something new. You'll be surprised at all the things you can truly accomplish. You'll find that's what life is all about. Experiencing new things and gaining new ground. So go out and try something new. Instead of paying someone do it yourself. You'll feel a lot better about yourself and learn something new. Just another notch you'll put in your belt of accomplishments.

I looked at all that was wrote. Almost got sick, but I read it all. He's the first person I ever seen that could speak for God.

God, loves everyone but thats the first time I ever heard someone say were a worthy individual in God's eyes speaking of themself.

Acquaintance, you seem to be very good at twisting my words. You should go back and read it again. You are mistaken or confused. I never tried to speak for God nor did I say I was perfect. I said I strive to be worthy. You should read a bit closer friend.
