Confused about blogPosted Thursday, August 20, 2009, at 5:08 PM
It has come to my attention that several people may perhaps be confused about my online blog. Let's see if I can clear things up a bit. A blog(according to definition)is:
"a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video." Note the key part of the sentence,"maintained by an individual." That phrase alone says it all as far as I'm concerned. To further alleviate any confusion, let me be clear on this. This blog does not in any way reflect the opinions of the City of Trumann or the Trumann Police Department. It does, however, express my opinions. True enough, I am a Trumann Police officer. So from time to time I may give my professional opinion. I might even hand out some advice or write about something pertinent to my law enforcement career. Who knows, I may even write about something that I was deeply emotional about, such as, oh say an event at a council meeting. That is merely my personal opinion. Thanks to the first amendment I've been given that wonderful right to express my opinion not only with my voice but in print as well. But, before I go into a "circuitous diatribe" let me end it here. I think you get the picture. I enjoy writing a blog on here occasionally. Sometimes they are few and far between. Other times they are frequent. I write on a variety of things ranging from the UFC(my favorite sport), my personal reflections on life, things in the community, as well as any other matter that seems to catch my fancy at the time. I hope that most readers can be informed and entertained as well. For those who find offense, I guess you can do like I would if I found something offensive. Either discuss it with the author or just plain don't read it. You have that right. NO one is forcing you to read this. So, if it is something you find distasteful I suggest you search elsewhere on the Poinsett County Democrat Tribune site. They have a large variety of things. I'm sure you'll find something to your liking. Lastly, for those of you who enjoy reading my blog and have expressed your enjoyment, Thank you. I'm glad you found something worthy or entertaining here. For those of you who don't, I'm truly sorry but I'm sure you can look around and find something to tickle your fancy. One final note: I am a police officer, not a politician. I've been working with the community in one way or another since I was about eleven years old. I enjoy helping people. I help people for the satisfaction of making someone a little happier. Not for some type of furtherance of a political career. I'm just an average guy trying to make a difference in his community. I've seen many things in my short lifetime which have caused me to have my priorities in line a long time ago. I hope all of you do as well. Thanks for the clarification. (Not that I needed it).
I think that if the people that did need some type of clarification would read some of your other blogs or maybe say hello to you once in a while, they'd know exactly what goes through your mind when you post a personal opinion blog.
Maybe if people would look at your personal opinion AS a personal opinion and not an attack--you wouldn't have to be clarifying it all.
Keep up the good work father, officer, citizen, American, and everything else that you are. Mainly Gary though :).
My friend
I'm glad to see you write this, now maybe when others post their opinion either here or other places you will not criticize them for their first amendment rights. Before you lash out at them for not agreeing with you, remember your on words.
Acquaintance: I don't believe I've ever 'lashed out' at anyone for their opinion. I may have disagreed with their opinion(which is my right as well as it is theirs to disagree with mine). If you'll refresh me as to when I've lashed out perhaps we can clarify that situation.
I have enjoyed reading your blogs Gary and while I didn't need clarification, unfotunately some people do. You just keep voicing your opinion because you have that right under the constitution and keep keeping the streets of Trumann safe!
Gary, please clarify some more things.
The following words in quotation are yours:
"It has come to my attention that several people may perhaps be confused about my online blog. Let's see if I can clear things up a bit. A blog(according to definition)is:
"a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.
Note the key part of the sentence,"maintained by an individual." That phrase alone says it all as far as I'm concerned." as per your quote Aug 20th.
You having said that, it is "maintained by an individual," Who then wrote, quote: "Ptl. Gary Henry has been with the Trumann Police Department for over ten years. He lives in Trumann with his wife and children. Ptl. Henry is very active in the community and he is a very social and funny person.?"
Gee, gosh, was this an opinion of yourself, or was it done by someone from the newspaper?
Why is it that out of the THREE sentences about you it is emphasized THREE times that you are an officer and associated with the Trumann Police Department?
Again, from your words from Aug 20th:
"To further alleviate any confusion, let me be clear on this.
This blog does not in any way reflect the opinions of the City of Trumann or the Trumann Police Department."
If that was true, you would not be mentioning 3 times in 3 sentences about your service as not only a patrol officer, BUT A TRUMANN POLICE OFFICER. If it's not your words, then who thought it was so important that this was mentioned so many times? How can your opinions not reflect on the Trumann Police Dept? The blog, should simply read Gary Henry if you're wanting us to believe this statement.
And again, your words in quotation:
"I help people for the satisfaction of making someone a little happier. Not for some type of furtherance of a political career. I'm just an average guy trying to make a difference in his community. I've seen many things in my short lifetime which have caused me to have my priorities in line a long time ago."
Want to really make a difference, run for office and get elected. Serve the people who elected you and not so much those who hired you as a patrolman with the Trumann Police Dept. Making someone a little happier as a police officer is a good attitude to have. But you would have to admit with your zeal and passion as a very wise and experienced young man, your access to bring happiness to the community is limited within your average guy world.
And for the thought that everyone who holds an elected position is nothing more than someone who wishes to further their political career, is bashing those who sign your paycheck and debate on whether you get a raise or you should be dismissed.
Isn't it strange how all that works?
The way your blog is set up and the way you continue to make snide remarks concerning those who hold office, is clear to me that you have a problem understanding yourself on how you manage your blog as a private citizen with their first amendment right VS a police officer serving and protecting his family and community and representing the Trumann Police Dept.
When this is cleared up, I'm certain more readers will enjoy your thought provoking experiences, opening even more doors to assist and bring happiness to all of Trumann's downtrodden.
Trumann could use a Batman.
But Gary, you're not that cape crusader.
TO The best we can do is the most:
You seem to think you know me very well. I'm afraid I'm at a loss. Care to introduce yourself?
I'll be happy to respond after I know with whom I have the honor of this correspondence.
Thank you Mr. Henry for opening this door, since you think you need to clarify things for those of us less informed. (Or those that don't agree with you) let's see the definition of bashing
bash*ing [ báshing ]
noun
Definition:
1. physical assault: mugging or violence, especially when directed at a particular group of people
2. criticism: hostile comment directed at a specific person or group
You words
Acquaintance: I don't believe I've ever 'lashed out' at anyone for their opinion. I may have disagreed with their opinion (which is my right as well as it is theirs to disagree with mine). If you'll refresh me as to when I've lashed out perhaps we can clarify that situation.
Now here are you words again I just read what you wrote up above and I'm going to paste it here so it want be so hard for people to find.
Another man brought to my attention that several people in his ward had contacted him. I asked his name and he told me Roy Kilgore. I'm not sure why people would be contacting him when he is not even a councilman but he claims they had. I later heard he commented that the city would not shut down due to Larry Blagg's untimeley death nor would the quality of life change.
Mr. Kilgore, I beg to differ with you. The quality of life for EVERYONE in Trumann has gone down since Larry's passing. Ever hear that old saying of you don't know what you got until it's gone? Well, Mr. Kilgore you truly have no idea.
(Now your own words) you heard that Mr. Kilgore commented and said something you did not know for yourself. You heard that someone said he said this. But you sure put him in his place with your comments on your blog, and you don't even know if he said it or not. That is called bashing my friend. Did you go to Mr. Kilgore and ask him if he said this I figure you did not.
You just took someone's word for something and you just could not control yourself you had to put your two cents in and tell this person that he truly had no idea. In other words his opinion did not mean anything to you and you were going to let him and everyone else in town know about it.
Well maybe next time you want be so hypocritical when you speak or write, maybe you should reread that entire blog that you wrote, you lashed out at everyone that did not agree with you. I have no doubt
That you feel strongly about Mr. Blagg you worked with him and I guess if the rest of us had worked and knew him like you did we too would feel that bond.
But to others he was just a man doing a job he wanted to do I'm inclining to believe no one forced him to do it. So when you look at others opinion before you say anything put yourself in their place I'm sure there are things they would like done for their friends.
By the way if you want to know what Mr. Kilgore said it was no secret here the link

It's been over a week now and I see neither Acquaintance nor The Best we can do is the most have the intestinal fortitude to introduce themselves. I suppose it's much easier to talk the talk behind pseudonyms isn't it boys?
Hmmm, a police officer with an attitude. That really didn't sound appropriate coming from the new assistant chief of police. From that attitude, I'm sure once you know my name, I and my family and friends surely won't have any problems from the police department, will we?
Now as far as names being a necessity let's take a look at;
Word Origin & History
blog
1998, short for weblog (which is attested from 1994, though not in the sense 'online journal'), from (World Wide) Web + log. Joe Bloggs (c.1969) was British slang for "any hypothetical person" (cf. U.S. equivalent Joe Blow).
Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2001 Douglas Harper
It's your blog, Gary, not mine. As far as you're concerned, "I'm John Q. Public." So I guess Acquaintance must be Joe Bloggs! Now when I begin to believe that my mind is so important that I need to start my own blog, well, then I'll want the world to know what my name is. Until then, the only things that matter with this conversation are the facts. You knew going into this blog world that this could happen, didn't you? Your name could be something else and I would have responded in the same manner. It's what you originally said and the way you said it with who you were portraying yourself to be that made me respond to YOUR blog. It's not who we are that these conversations are so interesting, but what we are. You decided up front that you wanted everybody to know who you were, or at least, what your name was. I saw no rules by the Democrat Tribune that told me I had to respond any differently.
For now, who I am, should not be important at all. Your thoughts, and how you present them should be the most important thing to you, not whether I 'm person A, or person Z.
To The best we can do is the most:
I stand by my words. People who truly know me know what kind of person I am. I've always been professional in my job, never personal. AS for my discussion with you or your sidekick, until you stop hiding behind your assumed names, we can't truly have a meaningful debate. I think debate is healthy and have no problem qualifying my statements. I just have no time for boys hiding behind fake names. Good luck prodding someone else into your games.
Mr. Henry, I read your statement and I have come to the conclusion that you are afraid to take responsibility for your actions.
First, just like in the other things you write you put me in association with the guy whom writes under the name (The best we can do is the most) this is a good example of your intelligence, you jump to conclusions very easily. This person used my writing name in his response to you and there you go putting your two cents in again with no facts.
You made this statement in your blog:
Acquaintance: I don't believe I've ever 'lashed out' at anyone for their opinion. I may have disagreed with their opinion (which is my right as well as it is theirs to disagree with mine). If you'll refresh me as to when I've lashed out perhaps we can clarify that situation.
Now here are your words again:
(Now do you understand what you wrote) you heard that Mr. Kilgore commented and said something you did not know for yourself. You heard that someone said he said this. But you sure put him in his place with your comments on your blog, you don't even know if he said it or not. That is called bashing my friend. Did you go to Mr. Kilgore and ask him if he said this I figure you did not.
Now again you need to reread that entire blog because you lashed out at everyone that had an opinion.
Now here is what I think:
You are so insecure about yourself that you cannot admit that you were wrong in what you wrote. (And by the way I don't think you have the mentality to write some of the things that are written on your blog). You did not write about your own opinions, you had to jump on and try to destroy others opinions because they did not agree with you.
Bashing other people's opinion is not writing your own. Writing an opinion is writing how you feel about a subject not bashing others on how they look or feel about an issue.
Now the question of whom I am or the other person that writes under the name (The best we can do is the most) is not what matters here. This is your blog you wrote what you did and we responded. As to the arrangement by the Trumann Democrat.
Instead of answering the questions put forth to you, you try and turn things around and elude the questions with more questions of your own.
All you need to do is look at this as we were concerned citizens, and you can either answer the questions or delete this blog.
Now you can try and make me out to be the villain here that's fine with me but most people that reads these things probably has already seen it and they know your wrong in what you said and what you're doing trying to evade it now.
I guess I must have missed something. You stated in your blog that Winkles, Cole, Moon and Wilson voted no to the name change on the street. You also stated that Evans, Henderson, Atkins and Owens voted yes for the name change. Baker was not there and Hargrove abstained. Am I correct?
This looks like a 4-4 tie vote to me. In this case wasn't Mayor Walters supposed to cast a vote to break the tie? Did she not vote on purpose or was there some other reason?
I'm just curious and question everything. If you find out more please update your blog. It just looks like parlimentary procedure was not followed to me.
Gary,I think these people on here are just trying to make you mad and it makes me mad when ppl just wanna argue ur doing right so dont worry bout what they have to say! peace to you and ur family man ur awesome!
I had no intentions of making anyone mad. I just asked a question as to why the Mayor didn't break a tied up vote on the street name issue.
I haven't gotten an answer yet, and maybe I never will. It was just worth asking.
To Question Everything: I am not familiar with Robert's Rules of procedure. It is my understanding that under the circumstances when someone abstains from the vote it is the same as a no. I was curious about this myself. That is how it was explained to me. That was the only answer I had on this matter.
