Area athletes, coaches to compete in state All-Star game

Athletes from Marked Tree, Turrell and Earle High Schools will compete this weekend in the 46th annual Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball and Football games, which will take place on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Jeremy Bell, Tony Hister and Derick Ames will represent Marked Tree in the games.

Bell was chosen to play in both games, but will play only in the basketball game. Hister was chosen to replace Bell for the football game and Ames will play in the football game.

Other area athletes playing in the All-Star Games include Lucious Lenear of Turrell and Cameron Cisero of Earle.

Marked Tree boys' basketball head coach, Barbara Wilburn will serve as an assistant coach for the East boys' basketball squad.

Wilburn, whose team won the Class AA basketball championship this year, will serve as an assistant under Osceola head basketball coach and East Head Coach Frankie Gathen. Tracy Allen, head coach at Little Rock Mills; Wes Swift, head coach at Hughes; and Charles Brown, head coach at Armorel, will be joining Wilburn and Gathen on the coaching staff.

Marked Tree's new football coach, Tim Branum will serve as an assistant coach for the East squad in the football game.

Branum will serve as an assistant coach for the East football squad, coached by 5A state championship coach, Mike Malham of Cabot.

Other coaches on the East squad include Randy Black of Cabot; Johnny McMurry of Monticello; Lanny Dauksch of McGehee (now of West Memphis) and Clay Totty of Rison.

The All-Star games will be played Thursday night at the Ferris Center, with the girls contest starting at 6 p.m., followed by the boys' game. The football game will be played Friday night at Estes Stadium, which is on the campus of the UCA.
