One dead in accident on U.S. 63

The Memorial Day weekend turned deadly last Saturday, when a 72-year old Ohio woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Ark. 149 and U.S. 63. According to Trooper Scott McLaughlin of the Arkansas State Police, at around 5:00 p.m., a red older model van was traveling north on U.S. 63, when a spray rig, driven by Jeffery Slack of Tyronza, allegedly struck the van. Soon after the accident occurred, various law enforcement and medical personnel arrived on the scene, tending to the victims. The driver of the van, Larry W. Grimes, 45, of Lake View, Ohio, was taken by Hospital Wing helicopter to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis. Grimes' condition was not known as of press time. Poinsett County Deputy Coroner David Layman pronounced the passenger, Elena Grimes, 72, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, dead at 5:11 p.m.

Assisting in the working of the accident were members of the Tyronza and Marked Tree Volunteer Fire Departments, Tyronza Search and Rescue, Poinsett County Sheriff's Department, Marked Tree Police Department, Tyronza Police Department, Riverside Ambulance Service, Rusty's Garage and the Arkansas State Police.
