Northeast Arkansas emergency officials participate in driving class

Thursday, August 8, 2002

Emergency officials from Northeast Arkansas were in Tyronza last weekend to participate in an Emergency Vehicle Driver Training Program class. The 15 to 20 in attendance from the host Tyronza Fire Department, Tyronza Police Department, Riverside Ambulance, Caraway Fire Department, Keiser Fire Department and Marked Tree Fire Department used the two-day event to gain classroom and real experience in operating ambulances, fire trucks, police cars and rescue trucks. The first day of the class was spent with instructor Bob Edwards of the Arkansas Fire Academy in Jonesboro, going over basics in operating these vital vehicles. Edwards stressed both maintenance and safety as working hand-in-hand, to do the job. Edwards also added that safety is important for all emergency officials. He said, "25 percent of all fatalities on the road are related to emergency vehicle driving. We must stress that drivers must pay better attention getting to the scene (of an emergency.) If a vehicle is tied up with a wreck, the patient will suffer as a result. And the percentage of wrecks related to emergency vehicles is too high."
