Marked Tree whips Turrell

TURRELL - The Marked Tree Indians defeated the Turrell Rockets 69-18 here in 3AA action Friday night.

"... These guys (Turrell) are just getting their program going," Marked Tree Coach Tim Branum said. "They're having fun playing. We take our hat off to them."

Marked Tree scored two touchdowns in the first quarter.

Kelsey Snow was the first to put points on the scoreboard with a 63-yard sprint on a second down attempt from Marked Tree's 37-yard line. The time on the clock was 6:03 as Snow crossed into the endzone. Fernando Zauala's extra point was good putting the Indians up 7-0.

The Indians second score came with 4:19 left to go in the first. Anquion Williams dashed from Turrell's 18-yard line to give Marked Tree its second score. Zauala's kick was good putting the Indians up 14-0.

In the second quarter, Snow hit overdrive from the Indians' 42-yard line with 11:50 left to go in the quarter. Zauala added the extra point for a 21-0 score.

Marked Tree took possession of its own kick off return on Turrell's 48-yard line after Andy Lung downed teammate Brandon Massey's kick. Williams then galloped to the endzone with 11:32 left to go before halftime. Zauala's PAT was good putting the Indians up 28-0.

On a second-and-one to score with 8:37 left to go in the second, Sugar Ray Jones crossed into the endzone. Zauala kicked the extra point making the score 35-0.

With 4:33 left before the half, Jones connected with Mark Johnson in the endzone from 20 yards out. The PAT was good putting the Indians up 42-0.

With 1:53 left to go in the quarter, Williams scored on a 30-yard run. The two-point conversion failed.

With the ensuing kickoff Turrell's Joe Gibson rocketed into the endzone putting 80 yards behind him. Left on the clock was 1:37. The two-point conversion failed.

With 1:22 left before the half, Marked Tree's Russell Gray returned the ball from the kickoff for a 65-yard touchdown run. The PAT was good putting the Indians up 55-6 going into the halftime show.

In the third quarter, Brandon Malone had a 62-yard TD run with 7:42 left to go. The PAT was good furthering the Indians' lead 62-6.

With 44 seconds left on the clock, Turrell added six more points to its score as Gibson connected with Triston Martin for the TD. The two-point attempt was no good.

As the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter, Indian Brandon Gillis ran into the endzone from 11 yards out. The PAT was good setting the score at 69-12 going into the fourth.

Turrell added six more points making the final 69-18 with 52 seconds left to go in the game. Martin scored for the Rockets with a nine-yard run.

For Marked Tree, Williams had 10 carries for 171 yards and Snow had four carries for 135 yards. Jones completed three of seven passes for a touchdown and 79 yards. On defense, Will Drace had two interceptions. Daniel Craig also had an interception and made nine tackles.

Marked Tree improved to 7-0 in the district and 7-1 overall.
