Marked Tree Veterans Day service
Marked Tree students and staff showed their appreciation for veterans with a Veterans Day Program, Monday evening. Elementary and Junior High choirs, along with the Sr. High Ensemble and Melissa and Michelle Dabney performed for the full house at the Marked Tree High School Auditorium. There were approximately 50 veterans from all branches of military service in attendance.
Vicki Stoddard, choir director, said that the elementary honor choir was chosen based on talent and good behavior. On average, there were approximately five chosen out of each class.
Stoddard coordinated the event, which culminated a week's worth of activities recognizing the veterans in the school. One project at the Elementary School had students gathering names of friends and family members who had served in the military, to encourage discussion about veterans with their families. High School students and Elementary gifted and talented students submitted poems, essays, thank-you letters and artwork which were compiled into a book which was given to each veteran.
Pat Dailey taught students important definitions in guidance class, including patriotism, loyalty, law-abiding, honor, respect and citizenship. Mrs. Donna West read "We the Kids," a story about the constitution, to students in the library. Col. Overbay gave a powerpoint presentation on "The American Flag" at the PowWow assembly and at the Veterans Day program.
The JROTC began the program with the posting of the colors. Lakeysha Doggett led the National Anthem, and the MTES Honor Choir led the Pledge of Allegiance. Student speakers included Rachel Young, Daniel Craig, Amy Tacker and Brooke West.
The choirs performed patriotic songs, including You're A Grand Old Flag, This Is My Country, God Bless The U.S.A., Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and an Armed Forces Salute.
