Burl James Gillis
Burl James Gillis, 76, of Payneway died Friday, January 24, 2003 at his residence.
Gillis, a Deacon and member of Corner's Chapel Baptist Church, a World War II veteran was preceded in death by his parents, Tillman Grady Gillis and Lela Ruth Valentine Gillis, one brother, Elvis Gillis and one grandchild, Dekoe Carroll.
Gillis is survived by his wife, Geraldine Gillis of the home; three sons, Jim Gillis of Jonesboro, Glenn Gillis of Marked Tree, Dennis Gillis of Jonesboro; three daughters, Linda Smith of Trumann, Ruth Ross of Marked Tree, Gaye Carroll of Bay Village, Ark., three sisters, Bernice Crone of Memphis, Mary Lois Yates of Marmaduke, Lavada Edwards of Clarksdale and one brother, Melvin Gillis of Trumann. Gillis is also survived by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Corner's Chapel Baptist Church, with Bobby Barnett, George Fink and Larry Loggins officiating. Burial followed at Jonesboro Memorial Park in Jonesboro, with Craig Ross, Johnny Carroll, Grady Gillis, Lee Ross, Garrett Gillis, Jared Gillis, Brandon Gillis and Nate Gillis serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Gillis, Wayne Loggians, Greg Gillis, Stephen Gillis, Michael Gillis and Mike Jones.
The family requests that memorials in honor of Burl James Gillis be given to the Corner's Chapel Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Murphy Funeral Home in Marked Tree had charge of the arrangements.
