Friday, March 7, 2003

The East Poinsett County School District announced this week the schedules for all spring sports, for the 2003 spring season. The school competes in baseball, softball and tennis in the 3AAA-South District. As for baseball, the Warriors are led by first-year coach Gary Williams. EPC has a tough schedule this year, with eight of the first 11 games at home in Warrior Park. The season starts March 6, with a home game against Armorel. After the Armorel game, EPC hits the road for two of their next three games, with games at district rival Valley View on March 8 and area rival Marked Tree on March 11. EPC has its home district opener March 10 against the Manila Lions and face Rivercrest on March 13. The next day, EPC travels to Armorel for a key non-district battle. After the Armorel game, EPC hits the brunt of the district schedule, facing several top-notch teams. A three game swing sees EPC facing Gosnell, Harrisburg and Valley View, all within a four-day stretch. After the Valley View game, EPC faces some of the toughest teams in Northeast Arkansas in a two-week stretch. Highlighting the schedule are games against Trumann (April 3 and 7), a doubleheader against Osceola (April 1), at Manila on April 8 and Blytheville on April 11. EPC ends its season with two straight road games, versus Cross County and Harrisburg. The 3AAA-South District Tournament starts April 19.

This year, EPC returns a team to the softball fields as the school participates in a ten-game schedule. The season starts with a home and home series against Manila on March 17 and 20. After those games, the team takes an 11-day break and returns to action March 31, with a doubleheader against Harrisburg in Lepanto. After the Harrisburg game, EPC has three of their next five games at home to end the season. Games during the stretch include at Osceola (April 1), Gosnell (April 8), Rivercrest (doubleheader on April 10) and Osceola on April 14. The Lady Warriors end their season April 17 with a road game at Gosnell. The team is coached by Sharon White and Jennifer Williams.

One of the least known "dynasties" in sports in Northeast Arkansas over the last few years has been the EPC tennis team. The team, coached by Tommy Ford, has won numerous state, regional and district titles over the last 10 years, in both singles and doubles play. This year, the team plays a 13-match schedule, filled with some of the toughest tennis teams in the state of Arkansas. The season starts on March 11, when EPC travels to Osceola for a key matchup. After the Osceola match, EPC faces district teams Trumann (March 13), Harrisburg (March 20), Valley View (April 1) and Riverside (April 7). In addition to the Riverside match, EPC faces several tough non-conference opponents. The non-conference schedule features Class AAAA Paragould on March 17, Class AA Earle on March 19 and April 9. The 3AAA-District Tennis Tournament will be held on April 21 in West Memphis.

The Class AAA State Tournament will be held in Pine Bluff on May 5-6.
