Imagine having the opportunity to change your looks and having a new lease on life. A Tyronza native recently had that opportunity and will appear on a national television show next Wednesday. Karen Richardson, a Tyronza native will appear on the ABC television show "Extreme Makeover" May 14. Richardson, a 44-year old nurse from Wilson will appear on the show, along with Sandra, a recently widowed 53-year old assistant manager from Arizona looking to enter the dating scene again, according to a press release released Tuesday by ABC Entertainment in Los Angeles.

On the show, which has aired for the last four weeks, two individuals are seen by the audience in their "before" phase, then are followed as they undergo various procedures and are finally seen by their family and friends in the "end" phase. Selection to appear on the show was fierce, with open casting calls and over 7,000 applicants all over the country applying over a several month time period.

As for Karen, she was given a chance to change her looks through the skills of an "Extreme Team." The team includes a plastic surgeon, an eye surgeon and a cosmetic dentist, along with hair and makeup artists, stylists and personal trainers. The group worked on her eyes, nose, neck and teeth to completely change her appearance. In the episode, part of which was filmed in the Tri-Cities area, Karen's new look was revealed to her fianc and their families on their wedding day.

"Extreme Makeover" is hosted by Sissy Biggers and is produced by Lighthearted Entertainment. The show is also produced by a group that has produced such television shows as "In Living Color," along with shows on Comedy Central. The director, Paul Miller, has also served as a director for Saturday Night Live and In Living Color.

"Extreme Makeover" airs Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. on KAIT.
