Marked Tree has home opener against Salem

Friday, September 12, 2003

After an opening loss to rival EPC, Marked Tree this week turns its attention to district play, where they will face the Salem Greyhounds. Salem (0-1, 0-0), with Head Coach Bob Grass was 5-5 last year and finished in a fourth place tie with Palestine-Wheatley in the competitive 3AA District. The Greyhounds are similar to Marked Tree, with the fact that both teams lost key players to graduation this year. Salem lost six players, including All-District quarterback Luke Barker. The team is led by junior quarterback Phillip Taylor, who scored a pair of touchdowns against Turrell last year. The rushing game is led by senior Rick Cowart and junior Lynn Harber. Cowart started six games last year and Harber is a converted lineman. The Greyhound defense returns six players, who held five conference teams last year to under 12 points per game. The defense is led by tackle John Arrington and sophomore Thomas Cooper.
