Oct. 30 declared Gene Ashcraft Day in Lepanto, celebration planned
It's not everyday that someone gets a day named after them in Lepanto. Just ask Gene Ashcraft, who was surprised recently when Mayor Dale Dunlap declared Oct. 30, 2006 as Gene Ashcraft Day in Lepanto.
Riley "Gene" Ashcraft is retiring from the United States Post Office after 39 years or service. The day named after him was declared in a proclamation issued by Mayor Dunlap earlier this week.
"Ashcraft is a committed employee and friend [whose] dedication to the community has always been with out question or complaint," the proclamation said. "He has, over the years, touched numerous people."
The proclamation goes on to declare next Monday as a special day of celebration in Ashcraft's honor.
"I…, with the help of the community, would like to join with his friends and family by celebrating his retirement and honoring his dedication to the community," Dunlap said in the proclamation.
The Lepanto post office staff is hosting a special open house in Ashcraft's honor from 9 a.m. -- 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30. They welcome everyone to come celebrate his nearly four decades of service.
