Mattie Sue Appling, 79, of Marked Tree died Thursday, July 12 at her home. She was born February 5, 1928 in McNairy County, Tenn. to Clarence and Versie Capooth who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her husband Henry Clay Appling, Jr., and two sisters Margret Lee Parker and Geneva Mae Hanna.

Appling was a businesswoman and lived in Memphis until 1990 when she sold her business and retired to Marked Tree.

She is survived by one daughter Patricia Lee Barksdale of Little Rock; two granddaughters Dr. Audra M. Prince and her husband Dr. John Prince of Little Rock, and Leesa M. Williams and her husband Scott Williams of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters Mary O. Smith and Barbra Prince both of Marked Tree; one brother William Kasey Capooth of Jonesboro; three caregivers Twiggy Parker Nikki Sharpe, Hope Burdette and a host of nieces and nephews. Private graveside services were held Saturday at Tyronza Cemetery with Brother Henry A. Priest officiating. Murphy Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial may be sent to Liberty Street Church of Christ or to the Friends of the Marked Tree library.
