Vandals damage Veteran's Park

Wednesday, December 8, 2004

In an effort to bring holiday cheer members of the Trumann American Legion decorated the Veterans Memorial Park on the corner of Main and Hwy 463 with lights, greenery and a reindeer pulled sled taking off from the Honest John missal, or rocket ship as it is commonly referred to.

"This was for the children to have something nice to look at," said Legion Post Commander Ron Taylor.

Sometime in the late hours between Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5 vandals tore lights off of the light poles surrounding the park and damaged the reindeer and sled on the missal.

The decorations have had to be completely removed and are in the process of being fixed. "They can tear it down a 1,000 times and we will put it back up," Commander Taylor said. "We did this for the community and whoever would destroy a war memorial park needs help."

According to Commander Taylor destroying a war monument is a federal crime punishable by up to $250,000 in fines and up to ten years in prison.

Trumann Police Chief Larry Blagg said the department is following up on all leads on the case.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident contact Commander Taylor at 870-483-1027 or the Trumann Police Department. A reward of $500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those parties involved with the incident.
