Single parents awarded scholarships

Thursday, March 8, 2007

The Poinsett County Single Parent Scholarship Fund (PCSPSF) awarded $1,833 in scholarships to four single parent students who were selected for the first time. In addition, 11 returning students were awarded a total $5,500 for the spring semester of 2007 to provide supplemental financial assistance for them to continue their college or vocational degrees.

The scholarships are awarded each academic semester and recipients can receive additional awards as they progress in their academics. Recipients can use the money for car payments, childcare costs or anything else that will help them stay in school and focus on their studies.

Since its inception in 1995, the PCSPSF has awarded 87 recipients over $48,500 in scholarships. Awardees have completed their education in a variety of subjects to include business, nursing, cosmetology, philosophy, data processing, digital electronics and paramedics. Many of these graduates have lifted themselves from welfare dependency to become viable members of society for themselves, their families and the community.

PCSPSF scholarships are available to all Poinsett County single parents who have a high school degree or a GED and have at least one minor dependent living in their home.
