Still in the learning stages

Thursday, July 3, 2008

My husband, James, and I have now had our children for over two weeks. At moments it seems like we have only had them five minutes and at other moments it seems as if they have always been with us.

Some of the best and worst times of the past two weeks have been nap and bed time. Campbell is so sweet when you are lying there with him. He likes to look at books, loves to sing songs and will just jabber and talk. But when he realizes he is tired and I am trying to put him to bed, he turns into a screamer. He does not like to go to sleep. At first I would lay with him for hours until he finally nodded off, often times nodding off myself. Finally we decided he needed to learn to be able to fall asleep by himself. We still read our books, sing our songs and jabber, but then I kiss him good night and tuck him in good. Then the screaming starts. He doesn't get out of bed just screams at the top of his lungs for about five minutes. Then he is out for the night.

It makes me so sad every night to hear him cry. But I know he needs to fall asleep, I just wish he could get to sleep without screaming. I even tried to rock him and he didn't like it.

Leah, who doesn't like to go to sleep either, is completely different. She will lay in bed wide awake for hours talking and singing to herself. She has occasionally been caught jumping on the bed when she is supposed to be sleeping, but she stays in bed. I don't know how she can lay there for that amount of time and not go to sleep. And it is not like I put her to bed at 7 p.m., it is usually between 9 and 9:30 p.m. And I can't go to sleep until I know my babies are safely tucked in and snoozing, so I am up late too.

As I type out this article, I can hear Campbell kicking his bedroom wall and Leah singing Twinkle Twinkle.

If anyone has any great tips or tricks for making bedtime any easier please, please let me know.
