PE teacher struck by car while jogging

Wednesday, October 1, 2008
A Trumann physical education teacher who was struck by a truck Sunday while jogging in Jonesboro remains in critical condition, a St. Bernards Medical Center official said Tuesday.

Bobbie Deeann Shoemaker, 44, of 3712 Keely Drive, was jogging with a companion along Highland drive between Harrisburg Road and Rains Street when she was struck by a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup, according to police reports.

The driver of the truck, Donna Taylor, 56, of 904 Owens St., was headed eastbound on Highland and told police the sun was in her eyes at the time of the incident.

Police said Shoemaker and her jogging partner, Vanessa Deveney, were running in the street on the southside of the eastbound lane at the time of the accident.

Shoemaker teaches physical education at Cedar Park Elementary School.

Trumann Schools Superintendent Joe Waleszonia is asking the public to respect the family's privacy at this time.

"It saddens the whole school district," Waleszonia said. "It's a tough situation for all of us including the teachers and students as well."
