Family of 12 loses everything in house fire

Thursday, March 26, 2009

A family of 12 lost their home and belongings last Friday when their trailer at 116 Jones Street in Marked Tree caught fire and burned. The three bedroom structure belonged to Beverly Barnes of Marked Tree. She was renting it to Terry and Barbara Woofard, who had ten children living in the residence with him.

"We think the cause of the fire was an unattended pot on a lit cook stove," said Marked Tree firefighter Wayne Hendrix.

Firefighters responded to the alarm around 4 p.m. and had the fire under control within the hour.

"It was a total loss," said Hendrix.

"Most of our children were at Vacation Bible School when the fire happened," said Barbara Woofard. "My husband and our two youngest kids were out in the yard. I was cooking supper and doing like mom's do -- cleaning and picking up while I was cooking."

Woofard said she stepped outside to ask her husband to get something from their car, and when she went back inside the trailer the pot on the stove was on fire.

"There was nothing I could do," said Woofard of the blaze in the kitchen. "It was an old trailer and it burned fast."

Woofard said the family had no insurance and weren't able to save anything from the house except a small container of clothes. However, they have been able to rent a new place to and partially furnish it.

Locals are rallying together to provide clothing for the family who lost everything in the fire. "It's hard," Woofard said. "We've been praying everyday and God is blessing us."

Clothes and shoes are especially needed for the ten children.

Their sizes are as follows:

Boy 1: Size 30/31 pants, size 16/18 shirts and size 8.5 shoes.
