Four local properties nominated to National Register of Historic Places

Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Four properties in the Tri-City area have been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. The State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program nominated the four properties, along with 16 others in 13 counties, when it met April 1, AHPP Director Frances McSwain announced.

The four newly nominated Poinsett County properties are:

*Tyronza Commercial Historic District, which the National Register nomination says is noteworthy for its associations with the commercial development of Tyronza and for its association with the nationally known Southern Tenant Farmers Union, with a period of significance spanning 1916 to 1959.

*Highway A-7 Bridges Historic District near Marked Tree, featuring three bridges, which were all built between 1922 and 1928, and were part of an effort to develop a spur of the Ozark Trail form southeast Missouri, to Memphis, Tenn.

*Highway A-7 Tyronza Segment, which was the main automobile route in that part of Poinsett County from the time of its construction in 1922 until the current U.S. 63 was built to the southwest of it in 1967.

*Highway A-7 Ditch No. 6 Bridge near Tyronza, which illustrates the importance of providing good infrastructure for automobiles, something that was sometimes difficult in the swampy areas Eastern Arkansas.

The AHHP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage agency that identifies, evaluates, registers and preserves the state's cultural resources. Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Delta Cultural Center, the Old State House Museum and the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission.
