TRUMANN - Martha Petroff Holmes, 84, of Trumann, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Mrs. Holmes was born in Blue Mountain, Miss., and had lived most of her lifetime in the Trumann area and was formerly of Memphis. She was a member of the Trumann Fine Arts Council, Library Board, Poinsettia Club, Democratic Women, and a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, former Poinsett County Sheriff, Ray Holmes in 2005; one daughter, Rita Johnson; one sister, Mary Griffith Strong; one brother, Ernest Alexander Petroff Jr., and her parents, Rev. Ernest Alexander and Lola Griffith Petroff.

Survivors include three daughters, Diane Thomas-Plunk of Southaven, Miss., and Dorothy Ione Beckner and Betty Inez Wess, both of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 29 at the First Baptist Church in Trumann with Dr. Tad Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery in Harrisburg.

Pallbearers were James Thomas "J.T." Wess, Brenton Maurizi, Tom Wimpy, Jerry Wimpy, Merle Williams, Tim Austin and David Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers included the Bethany Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.
