Marked Tree High School one of America's best

Friday, October 30, 2009
U. S. News and World Report has recognized Marked Tree High School as one of it's "America's Best" high schools, for the third straight year.

U.S. News analyzed over 21,000 high schools in 48 states, looking at reading and math results and then factoring in the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, who, according to the publication, tend to score lower to find which schools were performing better than "their statistical expectations."

MTHS received a Bronze award. Only Valley View in this area of the state also received a Bronze. No Arkansas schools received a Gold. No other high schools in Mississippi County, Crittenden County, Jackson County, Poinsett County, or Craighead County received this award. Only 36 schools of over 250 school districts received a Bronze award. This puts Marked Tree High School in the top 15 per cent in the state.

Anessa Thompson, Principal at MTHS during those three years, and now the Superintendent, noted that while MTHS is a school with 75 per cent poverty, "it is exciting that an independent reputable publication has recognized our work done to move our students forward. We believe in the abilities of all of our students, and we work hard to help them learn."

Parents and stakeholders, you can be proud of what your school has done and be excited about our future. Get involved.
