Change can be scary

Wednesday, January 20, 2010
I've never been a big fan of change. I'm the type of person who doesn't like to rearrange their furniture or suddenly paint the wall a new color. It's just not me.

My husband, Josh, has wanted a new television for forever. Sure the TV we have is from the early 90's, and it's not all fancy like the new flat screen ones. But it still works. And why get a new one if it still works? And what about my entertainment center? If we get one of those big flat screen TV's it's not going to fit in my entertainment center, and I'm rather fond of it.

Despite my reservations, the decision was basically made for me when my mother-in-law gave us a flat screen television for Christmas. At 32" wide, it was definitely too large for my beloved entertainment center. Of course, I couldn't really lament about that when Josh was basically doing cartwheels around the living room because of his new HD-TV.

For someone who doesn't really like change, I found myself shopping for a new TV stand (apparently entertainment centers are now "old school") and rearranging my bedroom to accommodate my entertainment center. I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it because it's too pretty. And besides, what would I do with all my collection of Willow Tree figurines?

Despite how much I dislike change, I have to admit that there is a certain amount of fun and enthusiasm involved in the process. I bought new window treatments for my bedroom and some new artwork for the living room because the wall where my entertainment center was suddenly looked awful bare. And moving furniture around means you get to clean under everything really well, so in the end everything feels really new and fresh.

So, while change might feel scary, it's also sometimes quite liberating. I'm keeping that in mind as I spend my last two weeks here at the Poinsett County Democrat Tribune. After six wonderful years here, I have decided to pursue another career. Josh and I have been trying to start a family, and a job with less hours and a smaller work load is just what the doctor ordered -- quite literally.

So, here's to change.
