Mr. Charles Wilson Atwood, age 88, a resident of 2953 Denton Rd., Thomasville, N.C., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, in the Hinkle Hospice Home.

He was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Laurel, Miss., son of the late Wilson and Annabelle Wooten Wilson. He was employed with Singer Sewing Machine in Trumann, Ark., for 17 years and then worked with Thomasville Furniture Inc. for 25 years.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Atwood was active with the Katrina Relief effort and was a volunteer with Britthaven of Davidson and Hospice. He was a member of Fair Grove United Methodist Church, Fair Grove Lions Club and Toastmasters Club.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Doris Ann Barnes, and a brother, Thomas Ray Atwood.

He was married May 28, 1949, to Charlsie Runnels Atwood, who preceded him in death Nov. 16, 2005.

Surviving are one daughter, Karen Atwood Murphy and husband Dean of Thomasville; one son, Ken Atwood and wife Susan of Thomasville, and two grandchildren, Cody Lee Tilley and Charles Matthew Dillon Murphy.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, in Fair Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. David Noyes officiating. The interment was in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and other times at the home of the son, Ken Atwood, 2953 Denton Rd., Thomasville, N.C.
