Lady 'Cats rally late to beat GCT

Trumann's Lady Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Hannah Walters retired the side in order in the top of the seventh as the Lady 'Cats posted a 5-4 victory over Greene County Tech.

Trumann (16-12) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Sarah Halfacre opened the inning with a single and took second base on an error by the right fielder. Sammie Jo Williams singled to put runners on first and third. Halfacre scored when Kelly Guthrie reached on an error and Williams advanced to third. Walters plated both Williams with and Guthrie with a double to give Trumann a 3-0 lead after one inning.

GCT finally figured Walters out in the top of the fourth. Katlyn Gomer and Kasey Parker both singled around a walk by Shayna Beaver to load the bases for the Lady Eagles. Destry Mallard cleared the bases with a three run triple down the right field line. Mallard scored on a Wildcat error to put GCT up 4-3 after 3 innings of play.

Cilla White opened the bottom of the sixth with a double for Trumann. Megan McGowan singled and took second on a GCT error putting runners on second and third. Halfacre singled to drive in White and tie the game with McGowan going to third. Guthrie laid down a bunt and when the pitcher threw to first McGowan took off for home and slid in with the go ahead run.

Walters retired the side in order in the top of the seventh as Trumann won 5-4.

Walters pitched all seven innings giving up four runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out eight batters.

Beaver took the loss for GCT as she pitched all six innings. She allowed five runs on 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Halfacre, Walters and McGowan each collected two hits for Trumann. Williams, White, Halfacre, Guthrie and McGowan all scored a run as Walters had two RBIs and Halfacre and Guthrie each had a RBI.

Mallard led GCT at the plate with a triple, run scored and three RBIs. Gomer, Parker and Shealynn Clark all scored a run for the Lady Eagles.
