Wildcats lose to Westside in district finals

Trumann and Westside met this past Monday in the finals of the Class 4A-3 baseball district championship in Pocahontas. Westside claimed the title with a six-inning run rule 10-0 decision.

Westside got out of the gate early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Jared Fuqua led off the inning with a double and came in to score on a single by Justin Fuqua. Garrett Shackleford, courtesy runner for Ju. Fuqua, scored on a double by J.T. Nortier. Lucas Johnston plated Nortier with a RBI single to make the score 3-0 after the first inning.

Trumann came close to getting on the board in the top of the second. Zach Vinson reached via a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Dylan Dulaney drew a walk. Vinson got to third on a passed ball. Vinson took off for home on another passed ball but Johnston got the ball to Ju. Fuqua covering the plate to tag out Vinson.

The Warriors added run in the bottom of the fourth as Johnston drew a walk to open the inning. Courtesy runner Kody Sullins stole second and later went to third on a wild pitch. Sullins scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

Westside increased the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Drake Cullum led off by reaching base on an error. Nick Hoffman came in to pinch run for Cullum. Ja. Fuqua singled to put runners on first and second. Wildcat pitcher Michael Criss tired to pick Hoffman off second base but no one was covering the bag and both runners advanced a base when the ball went into the outfield. Ju. Fuqua was hit by pitch to load the bases. Dylan Clark scored Hoffman with a sacrifice fly. Josh Baked drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single.

The Wildcats got two runners on with two outs in the top of the sixth before Ju. Fuqua struck out Vinson to end the inning. Westside scored three runs in their half of the inning to end the game. Tyler Hart reached base on an error to get things started for the Warriors. Hart scored when pinch hitter Zack Anderson hit a double. Cameron Jones came on in relief of Criss and was greeted by a single from Cullum. Ju. Fuqua drove in Anderson with a double before Nortier plated Ja. Fuqua with the game ending run.

Criss took the loss for Trumann going five innings and allowing nine runs. He walked one, struck out four and hit two batters. Jones pitched an inning giving up one run on two hits with no walks and no strikeouts.

Justin Fuqua got the win as he pitched all six innings allowing no runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked three.

Nate Maxwell led Trumann at the plate with three hits. Jay Ryan Woods had the Wildcats other hit.

Nortier and Ju. Fuqua both had two hit and two RBIs to lead Westside. Ja. Fuqua added two hit and three runs scored.
