Lady Indians claim district tournament title
Marked Tree's Peyton Carter and BIC's Madison Greathouse hooked up in a pitcher's duel this past Saturday in the championship game of the Class 2A-3 girls' district softball champion ship. The Lady Indians plated a couple runs in the fourth and Carter allowed only two singles the res of they way as the Lady Indians claimed the title.
The pitchers were on cruise control for the first three innings of the game as the team's combined for three hits. Marked Tree finally broke through in the top of fourth against Greathouse. Carter reached base on an error before Shelby Knight drew a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Caflora Hillis. Hillis and Carter both moved up a base on a passed ball before Carter raced home on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0. Paige Blansett delivered a two-out RBI single to set the score at 2-0 after 3 ½ innings of play.
BIC tried to make one last run in the bottom of the seventh. Bailey Owens started things off with a single. Katelyn Sparkman came on to pinch run for Owens. Carter buckled down retiring the next three batters to end the game.
Carter got the win also going all seven innings. She gave up no runs on four hits and struck out nine batters with no walks.
Greathouse took the loss pitching all seven innings. She gave up two runs on two hits while striking out six and walking one batter.
Blansett led Marked Tree with a hit and a RBI. Carter added a hit and run scored as Hillis scored a run too.
Greathouse, Callie Brooks, Kelsey Strickland and Owens all had had a hit for BIC.
