Stolen forklift results in Harrisburg death
An accident involving a stolen forklift resulted in the death Saturday, April 28, of Douglas C. Hanna, 20.
According to Sheriff Larry Mills, the Poinsett County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at 4:10 a.m. April 28 concerning a fatal accident involving a forklift near a residence at 4179 Old Military Lane, Harrisburg. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene to find a large forklift had overturned on its left side. Hanna was found beneath the roll cage.
Sheriff Mills said the roll cage of the forklift crushed Hanna as it overturned. Hanna was pronounced dead at the scene.
Further investigation revealed the forklift had been stolen earlier in the night from the Poinsett Turfgrass Company located at 3501 Highway 1, Harrisburg, and that three other individuals had allegedly been on the forklift when the accident occurred.
Jacob D. Cruz-Yancey, 19, Garrett Moore, 22, and Jason L. Faulkner, 18, were taken to the Sheriff's Office. Cruz-Yancey was charged with negligent homicide (DWI), felony theft of property, criminal trespass and minor in possession of alcohol.
Moore was charged with felony theft by receiving and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Faulkner was charged with felony theft by receiving and minor in possession of alcohol.
Poinsett County District Judge Ron Hunter set Cruz-Yancey's bond at $25,000. Moore and Faulkner's bonds were both set at $2,500.
Investigation of the theft is continuing, and Sheriff Mills anticipates another arrest.
