Judge rejects request to throw out death penalty for Lard

Friday, July 6, 2012

Last week, attorneys for Jerry Lard, who is accused of shooting and killing Trumann police officer Jonathan Schmidt last year, requested that Circuit Judge Brent Davis remove the death penalty from consideration in Lard's case. Judge Davis rejected the request to throw out the death penalty.

Lard, 37, will face a possible death sentence in the shooting death of Schmidt if convicted. Lard also faces an attempted capital murder charge in the wounding of Sergeant Corey Overstreet.

Lard's trial will begin on July 16 in Greene County.
