Donald R. Copeland of Ypsilanti Township, Mich., died peacefully at the age of 63 at his home Saturday, July 14, 2012. He was born July 17, 1948, in McCormick, Ark., the son of Alfred and Cleffie (Hudspeth) Copeland. Don was an over-the-road truck driver for 25 plus years until retirement, and remained a trucker at heart as he renovated two homes in which friends and family spent many hours preparing and sharing Southern home-cooked meals. Some of his other passions included maintaining and beautifying the lawn and garden, both of which required many hours spent on his red tractor. Don was loved by many and always found a way to make people laugh. Like his mother, he never met a stranger.

He served in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. As a proud member of the Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital Volunteer Staff, he spent hundreds of hours there, as well as receiving services from their wonderful medical specialist and caring support staff.

He leaves his loving companion of 25 years, Thelma Betterly; one daughter, Misty Dawn and three sons, Shawn, Brandon and Rodney Copeland; one stepson, Michael Kirk; one sister, Sue (Braden) Byrd and three brothers, Jim, Barry and Christopher (Scott Gee) Copeland; three sisters-in-law, Carmal (Norman) Baker, Carrie (Mark) Morin and Joan (Mrs. "JR") Copeland; two brothers-in-law, Milton (Janette) and Randal Walters; numerous and much loved grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as the Woody Family and Thomas DeMichele; and this man's best four-legged friend, Maggie Mae Betterly-Copeland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest brother, Alfred "JR" Copeland; his beloved mother-in-law, Betty DeMichele; his father-in-law, Roger Walters; and his niece, Stephanie Carroll Rix.

The funeral service was July 20 at Stark Funeral Service. Burial followed in Washtenong Memorial Park.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the family.
