Wildcats battle Brookland

Trumann travelled to Brookland this past Friday to take on the Bearcats in high school football action. After a close game in the first half, Brookland scored 28 points in the second half to take a 35-19 win.

Cameron Wright received the opening kickoff and returned it out to the Trumann 25-yard line where the Wildcats started their first possession. The Wildcats worked the ball out to the 47-yard line where the faced fourth and one. The Wildcats elected to go for the first down and Josh Evans picked up 18 yards to give Trumann a new set of downs on the Brookland 35-yard line. A.J. Winningham got Trumann down to the 12-yard line on a keeper with 7:25 left in the opening quarter. Trumann once again faced fourth down from the Bearcats seven-yard line. Brookland stopped Trumann's fourth down play and took over on their own seven-yard line. The Bearcats gained two yards on their first two running plays before their running back broke free on the third play and went 90 yards for the touchdown to put Brookland up 6-0 with 4:08 left in the first quarter. The extra-point was good making the score 7-0. Evans returned the kickoff to the Wildcats 31-yard line to start Trumann's next possession. A pass interference call on Brookland gave Trumann first and ten on the Bearcats 33-yard line. Cameron Jones took a sweep and gained 10 yards down down to the 23-yard line. The quarter ended with Trumann on the Brookland 11-yard line.

Evans put the Wildcats on the board with a six-yard touchdown run with 10:40 left in the second quarter. Cameron Jones added the point-after to tie the score at 7-7. Trumann squibbed the kickoff and Heston O'Brien recovers after Brookland has trouble handling the ball giving the Wildcats a first and ten on the Brookland 33-yard line with 10:36 left in the quarter. Another pass interference call against Brookland moves the ball down to 17-yard line. Trumann is backed up 10 yards on a holding call before Winnigham hits Cameron Jones with a 16-yard pass. Winninghan keeps on the next play and picks up the first down going down to the Bearcats seven-yard line with 8:25 left in the half. Evans puts Trumann ahead 13-7 with a four-yard touchdown run with 6:58 left in the quarter. Cameron Jones' point-after is blocked. Brookland brings the ball out to their own 45-yard line to start their possession. The Wildcats force a fourth down as Brookland goes for it and picks up 11 yards on a run to continue their drive on the Wildcats 42-yard line. O'Brien has two big stops for losses with the second being on fourth down as Trumann takes over on downs with 3:44 left in the half. Trumann is forced to punt and Brookland starts their next drive at their own 29-yard line. A 15-yard run on fourth and tree gives the Bearcats the ball on their own 45-yard line. A Bearcat receiver gets behind the secondary for what looked to be a 55-yard touchdown reception but the referee had him going out of bounds at the seven-yard line. Trumann held Brookland on downs and took over possession with 48 seconds left on their own five-yard line. Trumann ran the clock out to end the half with a 13-7 lead.

Brookland falls on the squib kick to start the second half and will start on their own 46-yard line. The Bearcats drive the ball down to Wildcat territory where they go for it on fourth and inches. The Bearcats make the first down at the Wildcats 32-yard line. Brookland's running back sweeps left and goes 32 yards for the touchdown with 9:59 left. The point-after is good making the score 14-13 Bearcats. Evans brings the kickoff out to the 34-yard line where Trumann sets up their offense. Trumann can't get anything going and are forced to punt with 8:29 left in the third quarter. Trumann's defense returns the favor as they force the Bearcats to punt with 6:16 left in the quarter taking over on their own 27-yard line. Wright takes the handoff and goes up the right side for 73 yards and a touchdown the put Trumann back up 19-14. The two-point conversion is no good. Brookland falls on the squib kick from Trumann and starts on their own 46-yard line. The Bearcats move the ball down to the Wildcats seven-yard line where they score on a seven-yard run with 2:38 left in the quarter. The extra-point gives Brookland a 21-19 lead. Brookland recovers the ensuing onside kick and takes over at the Wildcats 46-yard line. Brookland drives down into Trumann territory where O'Brien comes up big again with a stop for loss on fourth down giving the ball back to the Wildcats with 1:00 left in the third quarter. Trumann moves the ball out to the 31-yard line where they have it facing third and four at the end of three quarters of play.

Trumann takes the ball to the Brookland 46-yard line where they faced fourth and two. Trumann decided to go for the first but were stopped giving the ball back to the Bearcats with 9:32 left in the fourth. Dustin Hanna has a big stop for a loss followed by Austin Jones and Tyler Jones with another stop for loss on the option play setting up Brookland with third and twenty-six on their own 30-yard line. Brookland's running back takes the screen pass to the right and races 70 yards for the touchdown with 7:46 left to play. The extra-point was no good leaving the score 27-19 Bearcats. The Bearcats defense came up with an interception off a Winnigham tipped pass to take over at the Trumann 27-yard line. The Bearcats drove the ball down and scored on a six-yard run with 6:32 left to play. The two-point conversion was good stretching the lead to 35-19 Brookland. Cameron Jones had an exciting kickoff return as he went from sideline to sideline before being brought down at the Bearcats 42-yard line with 6:00 left in the fourth. Brookland again intercepted Winningham's pass and returned it out to their own 22-yard line. Trumann forced the Bearcats to punt and went for the block leaving nobody back for the return. The ball was downed at Trumann's 30-yard line with 2:25 left in the game. Winningham had a nice 10 yard run which was followed by incidental face mask and then a pass interference call moving the ball down to the Brookland 33-yard line with 1:49 left to play. Yet another pass interference call gave Trumann the ball on the Bearcats 13-yard line. Trumann was forced into a fourth and eleven with 1:18 left in the game. Trumann's pass was incomplete giving the ball to Brookland who ran out the clock to end the game.

Wright led Trumann with 108 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown with Evans rushing for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Winningham gained 89 yards on 14 carries and completed seven of seventeen passes for 67 yards with two interceptions. Maxwell caught five balls for 54 yards on the night.

O'Brien led the defense with 15 tackles, Tyler Jones added 12, Evans 10 and Jay Ryan Woods nine.

Trumann coach Greg White had these words after the game, "We told the kids that the team who wanted it more the second would get it." "I'm not disappointed in how we played, just had a few missed tackles. We will get ready for Cave City next week," White added.

Trumann falls to 0-8 and will host Cave City on Senior Night Friday at Wildcat Field.
