Jr. Wildcats fall to Highland in season finale at Trumann

Trumann's Junior Wildcats hosted the Highland Junior Rebels in the team's final game of the season last Thursday night at Wildcat Field. The visitors wasted little time jumping out to a lead as they coasted to a 40-8 victory.

Highland took Trumann's opening kickoff and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown to go up 6-0 with 7:46 left in the opening quarter. The extra-point try was no good. Alex Santos fielded the Junior Rebels kickoff and returned it out to the 30-yard line to set Trumann up with first and ten. Garrett Woods was sacked on third down forcing the Junior Wildcats to punt the ball away. Highland blocked Woods' punt before picking the ball up and returning it 12 yards for the touchdown. The extra-point was again no good leaving the score 12-0 Highland with 5:10 left in the quarter. Santos again returned the kickoff this time getting it out to the 34-yard line with 4:59 remaining in the quarter. Trumann moved the ball out to the 42-yard line where they went for it on fourth down only to be stopped on downs giving the ball back to Highland. Highland scored their third touchdown of the opening quarter as the Junior Rebels running back went 34 yards for the score. The two-point try was good to make the score 20-0 Highland with 1:26 left in the first quarter. Trey Moody returned the ensuing kickoff 15 yards to the Trumann 40-yard line. Moody found a nice hole and bolted 20 yards for a first down moving the ball to the Highland 40-yard line with 1:10 left in the first. The quarter ended with Trumann facing third and eight on the Highland 38-yard line.

Moody carried the ball down close to the 30-yard to open the second quarter where Trumann faced fourth and inches. Moody again got the ball and picked up two yards for the first down. Garrett Woods completed a pass to Moody for 18 yards taking the ball down to the Highland 11-yard line with 6:49 left in the second quarter. Trumann decided to go for the first down facing fourth and twelve. Garrett Woods pass fell incomplete and Highland took over on downs with 5:00 left in the second quarter. Highland took advantage of the turnover as their running back ran 86 yards on the first play for a 26-0 lead with 4:45 left before half. The two-point try was good extending Highland's lead to 28-0. Rico Moreno returned the kickoff out to the 48-yard line to set Trumann up with first and ten with 4:37 left on the clock. Trumann lost 11 yards back to their own 37-yard line on a bad snap. Garrett Woods had his pass intercepted by the Junior Rebels who took over at the Junior Wildcats 43-yard line with 3:48 left to play in the first half. Highland moved the ball down to the Trumann 33-yard line where they completed a 33-yard pass play for a touchdown with 3:31 left to play in the quarter. The two-point try was no good pushing the lead to 34-0 Highland. Dwalin Woods returned the kickoff out to the 42-yard line with 3:24 left in the half. Garrett Woods completed a pass to seventh-grader Preston Heavener who tried to get a few extra yards and fumbled the ball away to Highland with 1:51 left to play. Highland ran out the clock and took a 34-0 lead into half time.

Moody returned the kickoff out to the Trumann 38-yard line to start the second half for the Junior Wildcats. Trumann, facing another fourth down, elected to go for the first down but Garrett Woods pass to Hunter Terrell fell incomplete as Highland took over at the Trumann 45-yard line with 5:54 left in the third quarter. Highland was driving the ball down field when Lucas Moye stepped in front of a pass at his own eight-yard line and returned it 15 yards out to the 23-yard line with 1:03 left in the quarter. Trumann moved the ball out to the Highland 48-yard line where the third quarter came to an end. The Junior Wildcats will have the ball first and ten when the fourth quarter starts.

Kevin Blagg, a 7th grader, picked up 22 yards on a sweep moving the ball down to the Highland 26-yard line. Dwalin Woods took another sweep for 11 yards down to the 15-yard line. Moody broke through for nine yards putting the ball on the Junior Rebels one-yard line with 6:38 left in the fourth. A bad snap moved the ball back to the five-yard line before Blagg took another sweep in from five yards for the touchdown. Moody adds the two-point conversion run to make the score 34-8 with 5:45 left to play in the game. Trumann tried to pooch kick the ball but Highland recovered at their own 44-yard line. Highland moved the ball down to the Trumann 44-yard line. Highland's running back covers the 44 yards to make the score 40-8 with 4:41 left. The point-after is no good. Moody returned the kickoff out to his own 38-yard line where Trumann would start their next possession. Moody fumbled on the first play with Highland recovering at the Junior Wildcats 40-yard line with 4:28 left. Highland ran out the clock to post a 40-8 victory over Trumann.

"The first half we moved the ball pretty good but had penalties and missed assignments that hurt us," Trumann coach Cody Wallis said after the game. "We got our 7th graders in and they did a good job for us, we are looking for big things from them next season," Wallis added.

Moody led Trumann offensively with 71 yards rushing and 26 yards receiving. Dwalin Woods added 65 yards rushing with Blagg gaining 29 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

The Junior Wildcats finished the season 1-7-1.
