Lady Indians run by Trumann
Marked Tree's Lady Indians (2-0) were off and running from the tip as they handed the Trumann Lady Wildcats (0-2) a 54-22 loss at Wildcat Gym this past Tuesday night.
"We get after it for four quarters," Marked Tree coach Derik Drewett said about the Lady Indians.
Jay Perry opened the scoring with a nice spin move down low to put Marked Tree up 2-0 less than a minute into the game. Trumann's Morgan Taylor hit one of two free throws to make the score 2-1 with 6:57 left in the opening period. Trumann took their only lead of the game when Kelly Guthrie canned a three-pointer to put the Lady Wildcats up 4-2 at the 6:47 mark. Lexi and Poohnu Perry scored the next baskets for Marked Tree giving them a 6-4 lead. Guthrie tied the game at 6-6 with 5:45 to go on a jump shot. Jay Perry answered with a three-pointer to put Marked Tree up 9-6 and they never trailed again. Poohnu Perry scored inside and Jay Perry scored a basket to push the Lady Indians lead to 13-6 with 4:50 left in the period. Hannah Walters cut the lead to 13-9 with a three-pointer with 4:33 left in the first period. Jay Perry's jumper followed by back to back baskets from Dezare'e Reel gave Marked Tree a 19-9 lead after one period of play.
The teams traded baskets to open the second period Kali Bo Conaway and Morgan Taylor each scoring a basket around a Lexi Perry basket to make the score 21-13 Marked Tree with 5:20 left. The Perry trio scored the next seven points to push the lead to 15 at 28-13. Jay Perry drilled a three-pointer, Lexi Perry scored a bucket inside and Poohnu Perry hit two free throws with 3:53 left in the period. Lady Wildcat Courtney Toddy hit a three-pointer with 3:53 left to make the score 28-16. Cambria Marshall and Lexi Perry both scored baskets to push the Marked Tree lead to 32-16. Toddy hit two free throws with 55 seconds to set the halftime score at 32-18.
Trumann was ice cold in the third period as they were unable to score a point as Marked Tree put the game away with 10 points in the period. Caflora Hillis hit two free throws with 6:38 left in period to open the scoring in the second half. Poohnu Perry scored two buckets around a Lexi Perry inside bucket to push the lead to 40-18 with 3:35 left. Jay Perry made a lay up to push the lead to 42-18 at the end of three periods.
Diana Harris scored off a rebound to push the lead to 44-18 to start the final period. Guthrie scored Trumann's first points of the second half with a three-pointer to make the score 44-21 with 6:28 left to play. Harris nailed a three-pointer and Reel stole the ball and scored on a lay up to make the score 49-21 with 4:50 left. Morgan Taylor hit one of two free throws to make the score 49-22 with 4:43 left in the game. Peyton Carter canned a three-pointer and Reel scored in the lane to set the final score at 54-22 Marked Tree as the last four minutes were played under the mercy rule.
The Perry's combined for 34 points on the night as Jay had 14 and Poohnu and Lexi both scored 10 for the Lady Indians. Guthrie led Trumann with eight points.
In the junior high contest, Hannah Wood and Taelor Gartman each scored 14 points to lead the Junior Lady Wildcats to a 43-14 win over the Junior Lady Indians. Tullia Tull led Marked Tree with eight points.
"We try to leave it all out on the floor," Drewett added.
