Lady 'Jackets fall in opener to Maynard

The Bay Lady Yellowjackets and Maynard Lady Tigers met in the opening round of the girls Division I NEA Invitational Tournament this past Friday at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro. The teams swapped leads after the first two quarters. Maynard took the lead late in the third period and went on to a 57-50 win.

Jordan Roberts gave Maynard the early 3-0 lead with a three-pointer only to see Sara Sharp tie it for Bay on a three-pointer from the left corner at 7:18. Katie Ferguson scored inside for Bay and Roberts hit a basket for Maynard to make it 5-5 with just over six minutes left in the opening period. Ferguson got inside again for Bay to make it 7-5 before Micaela West tied it up again at 7 as she hit a jumper with 5:10 left in the period. Hannah Willard put Bay up 12-7 as she hit a jumper followed by a three-point bomb from the left wing at 3:30. West was fouled and hit one of two for Maynard making it a 12-8 game. Sharp canned a three-pointer with 1:47 left to make the score 15-8 Bay. West again made one of two free throws after being fouled to cut the lead to 15-9. Haley Howell scored on a short jumper for Maynard followed by a inside basket from team mate Hannah Roberts to make it 15-13 with 20 seconds left in the period. Willard hit another three-point bomb with 4 seconds left to make it 18-15 Bay after the first period.

Maynard scored the first five points of the second period to tie the game at 18. Hannah Roberts scored on a lay up, Caitlin Rowe hit two free throws and Jordan Roberts made one of two free throws after being fouled at 6:03. Ferguson hit two free throws for Bay at 5:45 for a 20-18 Bay lead. The Tigers scored the next six points to go up 24-20 with 2:39 left before half. Jordan Roberts made a lay up, West sank two free throws and Sibley Ray got inside for a basket for Maynard. Bay responded by scoring the last seven points of the period to lead 27-24 at the half. Willard got inside and made a basket before Sharp hit two free throws to tie the game at 24. Sharp drilled a three-pointer with 58 seconds left.

Jordan Roberts and West scored back to back inside baskets to make it 28-27 Maynard. Brittanie Cline, shooting for an injured Jordan Roberts, made one of two free throws making it a 29-27 game. Willard was fouled and hit one of two free throws at 5:27 making it a one point game at 29-28 Tigers. Cline scored a basket for Maynard making it 31-28. Ferguson hit two free throws before West scored down low for Maynard and was fouled. West made the free throw to make the score 34-30 with 4:26 to play. Sharp hit two free throws for Bay at 4:26 and Rowe scored inside for the Tigers to make it 36-32 Maynard. Bay scored five straight points to take a 37-36 lead. Willard hit a short jumper and Sharp hit one of two free throws after being fouled and hit a short jumper with 2:30 left. This would be Bay's last lead of the game. Maynard scored the last six points of the period to lead 42-37 after three. Howell scored a basket for Maynard at 2:12, Rowe hit nailed a three-pointer and Howell hit one of two free throws with no time on clock.

Clilne hit a short jumper to push the Maynard lead to seven at 44-37. Shelby Lynch got a steal and lay up for Bay to make it 44-39 with 6:07 left in the game. Jordan Roberts hit two free throws and Hannah Roberts made a short jumper to push the Tigers lead to nine at 48-39. Presley and Sharp both made two free throws a piece for Bay to cut the lead to 48-43. West hit a short jumper for Maynard to make it 50-43 with 2:32 to play. Sharp grabbed an offensive rebound and scored as she was fouled. Sharp made her free throw to make the score 50-46 with 1:51 left. Willard rebounded her own miss and scored and was fouled in the process. Willard missed her free shot to make it 50-48 with 1:32 left in the game. Cline got a lay up for Maynard before Ferguson hit a short jumper to make it 52-50 with 48 seconds remaining. West hit one of two free throws with 38 seconds left, Cline got free for a basket and Rowe scored a basket with five seconds left to set the final score at 57-50.

Sharp led all scorers with 21 points for Bay. Willard and Ferguson added 15 and 10 points respectively for the Lady 'Jackets.

Cline and West both had 14 points for Maynard as Jordan Roberts netted 12 for the Lady Tigers.
