Wildcats downed by Lions in opening round

The Trumann Wildcats and Manila Lions met in the opening round of the Division I NEA Invitational Tournament this past Friday at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro. Manila held on to down the Wildcats 65-63.

Nate Maxwell got the first points of the game as he scored inside for 2-0 Trumann lead. Dustin Sirman gave Manila the early lead with a three-pointer to make it 3-2 at 6:55. A.J. Winningham gave the lead back for the Wildcat as he nailed three making it 5-3. Dylan Bolgle grabbed an offensive board and scored to tie the game at 5 with 6:12 left. Scott Eubanks for Manila hit a jumper and Caleb Reinhart was fouled and hit one of two free throws to give the Lions an 8-5 lead. Trumann scored the next six as Cameron Jones hit a jumper in the lane, Maxwell scored on a lay up and Denzel Brown got inside for a basket to make it 11-8 Trumann with 3:17 to play. Sirman canned a three-pointer for Manila to tie the game at 11. Trumann's Cameron Jones scored on a lay up for a 13-11 lead before Manila scored the last six point of the period to go up 17-13. Brady Jones got a jumper to fall, Kyle Joyner got inside for a basket and Eubanks hit a jumper in the lane with 23 seconds left in the period.

The teams came out and swapped baskets for the first three and a half minutes of the second period. Bolgle hit a jumper at 7:51 to put the Lions up 19-13. Maxwell scored for Trumann of an offensive rebound as Manila's Reinhart answered with a three-pointer to make it 22-15. Winningham rebounded his own miss and made a basket before Thomas Davis hit a three-point bomb for the Lions to make it 25-17. Grayson Dye drilled a three-pointer for Trumann to make it 25-20 and Brady Jones scored inside for Manila to set the score at 27-20 with 4:30 left in the half. Trumann went on a 9-0 run give the Wildcats a 29-27 lead with 2:30 left to play. Winningham netted a three-pointer and Cameron Jones made back to back buckets inside before Maxwell scored off an offensive rebound. Zac Riley for Manila tied the game with a basket at 2:16. Winnigham hit a short jumper at 1:29 for Trumann for a 31-29 lead only to see Brady Jones tied the game for Manila with two free throws with 56 seconds left. The team went to the break tied at 31.

Eubanks for Manila scored a basket at 7:09 and was fouled. Eubanks' free throw made it 34-31 Lions. Winningham tied the game at 34 with a three-pointer at 6:15 for Trumann. Brady Jones hit a runner Manila and was fouled in the process. Jones made his free throw to put Manila up 37-34 at the 6:06 mark. Winningham drilled another three-pointer for Trumann to tie the game back up at 37-37. Cameron Jones hit a jumper for the Wildcats to put them up 39-37 before Manila took a three point lead after Bolgle scored inside and Reinhart made a three-pointer. The Wildcats went on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 48-42 with 1:36 left. Cameron Jones started the run after hitting one of two free throws after being fouled. Winningham hit a jumper before Jones scored the next six with two free throws and pair of jumpers in the lane. Bolgle cut the lead to four as he hit two free throws at 1:02 to se the score at 48-44 after three periods of play.

Eubanks got Manila within two at 48-46 with a steal and lay up at 6:05. Maxwell hit one of two free throws to make it 49-46 Wildcats. Brady Jones hit a jumper and Bolgle rebounded his own miss and scored to make it 50-49 Manila. Dye hit two free throws to make it 51-50 Trumann before Riley scored inside for Manila to make it 52-51. Winningham hit a three to put the Wildcat up 54-52 at 3:51. Manila scored the next five points as Riley hit one of two free throws, Bolgle got an offensive rebound and scored and Reinhart hit two free throws to put the Lions up 57-54 with 1: 28 left in the game. Jacob Brumley made two free throws to get Trumann to within one at 57-56 with 1:04 left. Riley got inside for a basket for Manila, Bolgle made one of two free throws before Riley hit two free throws for a 62-56 Lions lead with 29 seconds left. Winningham cut the lead to three at 62-59 for Trumann with a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining. Brady Jones hit one of two free throws making git 63-56 Lions. Cameron Jones hit a jumper to make it 63-61 Manila with 13 seconds to go. Brady Jones hit two free throws with 11 seconds left in game and Cameron Jones hit a jumper with four seconds left to set the final at 65-63 Manila.

Winningham led all scorers with 24 points with Cameron Jones adding 21.

Manila was led by Brady Jones with 14 points as Bolgle added 13 points.
