Lady Yellowjackets fall in overtime thriller

Bay hosted Maynard in high school girls' basketball action this past Tuesday. The game saw two ejections, three technical fouls, an overtime period and two crucial intentional fouls in that overtime period. Maynard caught fire in the overtime period outscoring Bay 21-11 to post a 62-52 win.

Maynard opened the game with a 6-0 as Brittanie Cline opened the game with a three-pointer at the 7:43 mark to put Maynard up 3-0. Jordan Roberts increase the lead to 5-0 grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back in. Micaela West of Maynard was fouled by Katie Ferguson and hit one of two free throws to make it 6-0 at 5:58. Bay coach Chad LaRose was issued a technical foul and before the free throws could be shot LaRose was issued another technical and that carried an ejection from the game. Assistant coach Jerri Manley took over for LaRose. Haley Howell hit two of four free shots from the technicals putting Maynard up 8-0 at 5:27 to play. Bay's Hannah Willard stole the ball and went in for a lay up to give Bay their first points and make it an 8-2 game. Jade Presley cut the lead for Bay when she canned a three-pointer from the right wing to make it 8-5. Maynard's Roberts was issued a technical foul after slamming the ball down at the conclusion of a play. Willard hit one of the two free shots from the technical to make it 8-6. West gave Maynard a 9-6 lead at 1:02 after hitting one of two free throws after being fouled by Brittany Roedel. That was the score when the eventful first period came to an end.

Hannah Roberts scored the first points of the second period as she hit a jumper for the Tigers making the score 11-6. Sara Sharp was fouled by Maynard's Howell and hit one of two free throws at 7:08 to make it 11-7 Maynard. Willard cut the lead to two as she got her own rebound off a miss and scored to make it 11-9. Howell made one of two free throws after being fouled by Ferguson to make it 12-9. Willard made the score 12-11 Maynard with a jumper in the lane at 5:26. Caitlin Rowe hit a jumper for the Tigers to push the lead to three at 14-11. Willard was fouled by West with 4:52 left and hit one of two free throws making it 14-12. West got inside for Maynard and Willard hit a jumper to make the score 16-14 Tigers. Ferguson scored a basket inside for Bay and Willard drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to set our halftime score at 19-16 Bay.

Ferguson hit two free throws after being fouled by West to give Bay a five point lead at 21-16. Jordan Roberts got inside to score for Maynard before Bay got back to back buckets from Sharp and Willard to make it 25-18 Bay with 6:35 left in the second. Rowe hit a three-pointer from the right corner for Maynard to make it a 25-21 game. Rowe was fouled and hit one of two free throws at 6:02 making it 25-22 Bay. Sharp scored on back to back possessions for Bay making a lay up and then netting a three-pointer to put Bay up 30-22. Jordan Roberts hit one of two free throws, Rowe got inside for basket and Jordan Roberts again connected on one of two free throws for Maynard to cut the lead to 30-26. Ferguson got free for a lay up and then hit two free throws after being fouled by Maynard's Hannah Roberts to give Bay a 34-26 lead. Sibley Ray hit a baseline jumper at 1:24 that set the score at 34-28 after three periods of play.

Jordan Roberts hit a jumper in the lane at 7:44 to make it 34-30 Bay. Sharp got inside for Bay and Roedel canned a three-pointer from the right corner to extend Bay's lead to 39-30. Rowe hit two free throws for Maynard after being fouled by Sharp at 5:42 and Sharp made two free throws after being fouled by Rowe with 4:59 left to play to make the score 41-32 Yellowjackets. Howell made two free throws for Maynard before Jordan Roberts hit one of two for the Tigers to make it 41-35. West was fouled by Sharp as she made a lay up and was good on the free throw to cut the lead to 41-38. Rowe hit one of two free throws a 1:30 before West went the length of the floor and hit a lay up to tie the game at 41 with six seconds left and send the game to overtime.

Maynard started the overtime on a 7-0 run to make it 48-41. West scored inside, Jordan Roberts hit a baseline jumper and Rowe canned a three from the top of key with 2:28 to play. Willard hit two free throws for Bay to make it 48-43 before West made a lay up for the Tigers to push the lead back to seven at 50-43. Ferguson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored for Bay only to see Jordan Roberts get a lay up for Maynard to make it 52-45. West hit one of two free throws for Maynard and Ferguson scored on a lay up for Bay to make it 53-47 with 1:23 left. West hit two free throws for Maynard before Willard hit a running jumper while being fouled. Willard free throw as good making it 55-50. West scored on a lay up with 32 seconds left pushing the Maynard lead to seven at 57-50. Sharp got a jumper in the lane to fall for Bay with 23 seconds left making the score 57-52. West hit one of two from an intentional foul by Willard before hitting two free throws from an intentional foul from Shelby Lynch. West set the final score with two free throws with six seconds left giving Maynard the 62-52 win.

"I thought our girls played hard," assistant coach Manley said after the game. "I think we made some mistakes that cost up late in the game," Manley added.

Willard led three player in double figures for Bay with 20 points. Sharp added 14 points and Ferguson scored 12 points.

West led all scorers with 23 points for Maynard as Rowe added 14 points and Jordan Roberts 13 points.

Maynard won the junior high game 33-13.
