Bay wins fourth straight Kell Classic

The Bay Yellowjackets claimed their fourth straight title in the boys' division of the George Kell Classic this past Saturday in Swifton by downing Hoxie 85-61.

Hayden Defries scored inside for Hoxie at 7:40 to give the Mustangs the early 2-0 lead. Tyson Oliver hit the first of his three three-pointers at 7:25 for a 3-2 Bay lead. Slade Sullens worked his way inside for a score giving Hoxie a 4-3 lead at 6:38. Hoxie would not lead again in the game. Oliver drilled his second three from the left wing to make it 6-4 'Jackets. Tyler Pritchett got a steal and scored on a lay up to make it 8-4 Bay. Colton Watson drilled a three-pointer for Hoxie making it 8-7 with 4:55 to play. Dylan Loven hit one of two after being fouled by Watson to give Bay a 9-7 lead. Dylan hit a jumper at 4:27 to stretch the Bay lead to 11-7. Oliver stole the ball and scored a lay up making it 13-7 Bay with 4:09 left. Pritchett made it 14-7 with one of two free throws with 3:33 left in the opening period. Jacob Defries scored inside for Hoxie and was fouled by Oliver. Defries free throw made it 14-10 Bay. Loven and Zack Johnson hit back to back shots in the lane for Bay making the score 18-10. Jacob Defries hit two free throws at 2:02 to cut the lead to 18-12 Bay. Pritchett hit a three from the top of the key and Oliver hit another three from the top of key on Bay's next possession and and was fouled. Oliver's free throw pushed the Bay lead to 25-12. Watson hit a baseline jumper Hoxie with 47 seconds left in the first to make it 25-14. Loven hit two free throws after being fouled by Watson with 36 seconds left to set first period score at 27-14.

Johnson opened the second period for Bay by canning a three-pointer from the left wing at 7:44 to make it 30-14. Hoxie's Watson got an offensive rebound and put it back in to make the score 30-16. Tristan Privett cut the lead to 12 at 30-18 as he got free for a lay up for the Mustangs. Pritchett got inside for Bay to score before Johnson was fouled and hit two free throws to make it 34-18 Bay. Jacob Defries scored inside for Hoxie at 6:05 making it 34-20. Hoxie cut the lead to 10 as Hayden Defries hit two free throws after being fouled by Pritchett and Privett scored off an offensive rebound to make the score 34-24 Yellowjackets. Bay got two free throws from Holt and one from Oliver to push the lead back to 37-24. Watson and Kylor Skaggs traded baskets to make it 39-26 with 3:38 left. Privett drilled a three from the left corner for Hoxie making it 39-29 before Oliver scored on a lay up off a pass from Will Turner who came up with a steal for Bay to make it 41-29. Privett and Oliver traded a free throw a piece to make it 42-30 with 1:16 left before half. Privett canned another three from the left wing for Hoxie with 58 seconds left to make it 42-33. Oliver hit a floater for Bay with 40 seconds left then got inside with two seconds left to make the score at half 46-33 Bay.

Jacob Defries got inside to start the third period for Hoxie making the score 46-35 Bay. Loven worked his way down low and scored for Bay at 7:17 to make it 48-35. Watson netted a three from the right wing for the Mustangs to cut the lead to 10 at 48-38. Bay responded with a jumper from Pritchett and an inside basket from Holt to push the lead back to 52-38. Jacob Defries was fouled by Oliver and hit two free throws before Bay got an inside basket from Johnson and a free throw from Loven to make the score 55-40 with 4:12 left in the period. Jacob Defries made another two free throws after being fouled to make it a 55-42 game. Holt scored on a lay up and was fouled by Seth Hart. Holt was good on the free throw to give Bay a 58-42 lead. Privett made one of two free throws at 1:36 to cut the lead to 58-43. Bay answered with a three-pointer from Holt on the left wing and two free throws from Pritchett to push the lead to 63-43 with 47 seconds left in the third. Tristan Sisco was fouled by Johnson with 33 seconds and hit both free throws to make the score 63-45 after three periods of play.

Jacob Defries made a lay up for Hoxie to start the fourth period and make the score 63-47. Bay went on a quick 8-0 as Johnson canned a three from the left wing then grabbed an offensive rebound and scored and Holt drilled a three-pointer from the left wing to make it 71-47 Bay. Privett made a three from the left wing for Hoxie putting the score at 71-50. Loven was fouled by Noah Adamson and hit both free throws to make it 73-50 'Jackets. Privett hit another three for Hoxie at 5:46 to cut the lead to 73-53. Johnson answered with a three for Bay to push the lead to 76-53. Sullens hit a jumper for the Mustangs before Johnson canned another three for Bay and Mark Taggart scored inside to push the Yellowjackets lead to 81-55. Turner got another steal and went in for a lay up for Bay to make it 83-55 with 1:48 left in the game. Hoxie scored the next six as Aaron French hit two free throws, Privett made one to two free throws and then connected on his third three of the period to make it 83-61. Cade Prince finished out the scoring for Bay as he hit two free throws with 40 seconds giving Bay the four-peat with a final score of 85-61.

"I think we shot the ball really well tonight," Bay coach Brad Brannen said. "Winning this thing four times in a row, and this senior class winning three of those, is a great accomplishment for our kids," Brannen added.

All five Bay starters scored in double figures led by Oliver and Johnson with 20 points a piece. Holt added 13 points while Loven and Pritchett had 12 points each on the night.

Hoxie's Privett led all scorers with 22 points as Watson added 12 for the Mustangs.
