Lady 'Jackets roll by Black Rock

The Bay Lady Yellowjackets (16-7, 6-2 1A-3) hosted the Black Rock Lady Zebras in a girls' 1A-3 conference game last Thursday night. Bay jumped out a 26-10 first period lead and never looked back as they rolled to a 74-39 victory.

Brittany Roedel gave Bay the early 3-0 lead as she drilled a three-pointer from the left corner at 7:12 of the opening period. Shelby Lynch stretched that lead to 5-0 as she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. Christian Ervin got inside for Black Rock and scored making it 5-2 Bay. Hannah Willard bombed in a three-pointer from beyond the top of the key to make it a six point Bay lead at 8-2. Christian Ervin worked her way inside again for the Lady Zebras and scored to make it 8-4 with 4:57 left. Bay went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to push their lead to 17-4. Katie Ferguson canned a three-pointer, Willard scored on a lay up and Lynch scored back to back baskets to finish the run with 2:56 left to play. Christian Ervin was fouled by Lynch and hit one of two free throws to make the score 17-5. Sara Sharp hit a jumper in the lane for Bay making it a 19-5 Bay lead. Erica Bass hit a jumper for the Lady Zebras at 2:04 before Bay reeled off seven straight points. Sharp made two technical free throws due to Black Rock's substitution violation, Ferguson got free for a lay up, Jade Presley made one of two free throws and Ferguson got inside to score making it 26-7 Bay with 17 seconds left in the opening period. Christian Ervin netted a three-pointer with 8 seconds left to set the first period score at 26-10.

Roedel drained another three from the left corner to open the second period scoring and pushing Bay's lead to 29-10. Christian Ervin was fouled by Lynch and hit one of two free throws to make it 29-11. Willard hit another long three from beyond the top of the key making the score 32-11 at 5:53. Rebecca Simpson made two free throws for Black Rock to cut the lead to 32-13. Rachael Weekley hit a three-pointer for the Lady Zebras making it 32-16 with 2:07 before half. Ferguson got inside for a basket for Bay with 38 seconds left to set the halftime score at 34-16.

Willard hit a three and Lynch back to back inside baskets to get Bay off to a good start in the third period making the score 41-16. Christian Ervin drilled a three-pointer for Black Rock before Roedel drilled another three for Bay from the right wing to make the score 44-19 with 5:24 left. Ferguson was fouled and hit one of two free throws before Brianna Fletcher canned a three for Bay to extend the lead to 48-19. Erica Bass made two free throws for Black Rock after being fouled by Presley to make it 48-21. Willard hit a three from the left wing and then made two free throws to push the lead to 53-21. #23 made two free throws for Black Rock, Sharp hit one of two for Bay, Christian Ervin made two more for the Lady Zebras and Ferguson scored inside for Bay with two seconds left in the period to make the score 56-25 Bay after three.

The mercy rule was put into affect to start the fourth period. Bay opened the fourth period with an 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 64-25. Ferguson and Sharp scored on back to back jumpers in the lane before Ferguson and Lynch scored on back to back lay ups. Megan Carey hit a jumper for Black Rock to make it 64-27 with 5:16 to play. Presley got inside to score for Bay as Weekley answered with a three-ball for Black Rock making it 66-30. Caylia Ervin scored inside for Black Rock, Ferguson scored on a lay up for Bay and Caylia Ervin got inside again for Black Rock to score making it a 68-34 game with 2:25 left. Willard and Christian Ervin traded three-pointers making it 71-37. Carey scored inside for Black Rock at 1:23 and Roedel hit her fourth three of the game for Bay with four seconds left to set the final at 74-39.

"It was a game we needed after losing four of our last five," Bay coach Chad LaRose said after the game. "Our third period has not been good the last few games. We talked about not being stagnant and to come out and have a third period like we did, maybe they are catching on to what we are trying to do," LaRose added.

Ferguson led four Bay players in double figures with 18 points. Willard scored 16 points, Lynch finished with 13 points and Roedel netted 12 for the Lady Yellowjackets.

Christian Ervin led all scorers on the night with 19 points for Black Rock.
