Lady Indians fall in furious finish

For the first three periods of the game featuring the Marked Tree Lady Indians and Riverside Lady Rebels, you could not have asked for a better game. Back and forth scoring and good all around play. Marked Tree led 12-10 after one and the game was tied 26-26 at half and 41-41 at the end of three. The final period was totally different. Riverside went on a scoring frenzy hitting six three-pointers and putting up 36 points to claim a 77-55 victory.

Marked Tree got on the board first as Poohnu Perry got inside to score a basket for a 2-0 lead. Catlyn Sailor answered with a jumper for Riverside to tie it with 7:04 left. Poohnu worked her way inside again and scored another basket making it 4-2 Marked Tree. Jay Perry drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 7-2 Lady Indians. Anna Brickell answered with a three from the right corner for Riverside to cut the lead to 7-5. Lexi Perry scored down low for Marked Tree to push the lead to 9-5. Kenzley Wilson was fouled and hit two free throws for the Lady Rebels making the score 9-7. Lauren Weaver tied the game up with a basket inside with 2:18 left in the opening period. Lexi Perry scored inside and was fouled in the process. Perry made her free throw to make it a 12-9 Marked Tree lead. Natalie Milligan hit one of two free throws for Riverside to set our first period score at 12-10 Lady Indians.

The teams turned up the offense a little in the second period. Marked Tree opened with a 5-0 run to go up 17-10. Jay Perry got inside for a scored, Poohnu was fouled and hit one of two free throws and Lexi Perry got a rebound off her own miss and scored with 6:40 left to play. Weaver hit two free throws for Riverside before teammate Wilson got an offensive rebound and scored to make it a 17-14 game. Lexi Perry sank two free throws after being fouled to make the score 19-14 before Chelsea Nichols canned back to back three-pointers for Riverside to give the Lady Rebels and 20-19 lead with 5:15 left in the period. Diana Harris worked inside for a Lady Indians basket giving them the lead back at 21-20. Wilson hit a running jumper in the lane for Riverside before she made one of two free throws at 3:44 to give the Lady Rebels a 23-21 lead. Marked Tree ran off a little 5-0 run to take a 26-23 lead with 1:45 left. Poohnu hit three of four free throws at the start of the run and Peyton Carter hit a jumper to finish the run. Wilson was fouled making a basket inside to cut the lead to 26-25. Her free throw was good to tie the game 26 with 1:11 left. The teams went to the half tied at 26.

Carter opened the third period by making a three-ball from the right wing and giving the Lady Indians a 29-26 lead. Weaver got inside for a score for Riverside to make it 29-28. Lexi Perry got an offensive rebound and scored for Marked Tree giving them a 31-28 lead. Weaver got inside again for Riverside and scored at 5:24 to make it a 31-30 game. Poohnu made a lay up before Carter hit another three from the right wing to give the Lady Indians a 36-30 lead. Catlyn Sailor worked her way inside and scored for Riverside only to see Poohnu answer with a jumper to make it 38-32 Marked Tree with 3:50 left in the period. Wilson was fouled and hit both free throws for the Lady Rebels before Brickell was fouled making a shot for Riverside. Brickell's free throw was good to cut the Marked Tree lead to 38-37. Poohnu pushed the lead to four as she hit one of two free throws and then a jumper making it 41-37 with 1:58 left. Wilson scored inside for Riverside and Brickell got a lay up with 14 seconds left to tie the game at 41 heading into the final period.

Riverside opened the final period by going on a 16-6 run in the first three minutes of play. Weaver hit the first of her four three-pointers in the period from the right wing to put Riverside up 44-41. Weaver canned three from the top of the key thirty seconds later to extend the Lady Rebels lead to 47-41. Poohnu got a jumper to fall at 6:54 to make it 47-43. Weaver hit her third three in a row from the right wing making the score 50-43 Riverside. Jay Perry got inside to score for Marked Tree putting the score at 50-45. Weaver got inside for Riverside and scored to push the lead to seven at 52-45. Jay Perry got an offensive rebound and scored inside making it 52-47. Chelsea Nichols canned a three-pointer from the left corner for Riverside to make it a 55-47 Lady Rebels. Brickell was fouled and hit two free throws to push the Riverside lead to 57-47 with 5:01 left. Poohnu hit a jumper in the lane before Riverside reeled off six straight points. Weaver got inside for a basket, Milligan scored inside and was fouled. Milligan missed her free throw but Weaver grabbed the rebound and scored for Riverside to make it 63-49. Jay Perry was fouled as she made a jump shot with 3:54 left. Her free throw was good to make the score 63-52. Weaver drilled another three-pointer from the top of they key before Nichols hit two free throws to give Riverside a 68-52 lead. Lexi Perry scored down low for Marked Tree to make it 68-54 with 3:13 left. Nichols canned a three-ball from the right corner for the Lady Rebels to make the score 71-54. The rest of the game's scoring came on free throws. Poohnu hit one of two for Marked Tree before Wilson finished out the scoring by hitting six of eight free throws over the last two minutes to make the final score 77-55.

"We got to defend late in the ball game," Marked Tree coach Derik Drewett said after the game. "They were six for six behind the three-point line and scored 36 points in the last period, we can't let down defense and still have to contest," Drewett added.

Poohnu Perry led Marked Tree with 22 points, Lexi Perry scored 13 points and Jay Perry finished with 10 points for the Lady Indians.

Weaver led all scorers for Riverside with 24 points. Wilson tossed in 20 points, Nichols netted 14 points and Brickell finished with 12 points for the Lady Rebels.

Marked Tree won the junior high game 32-27.
