Local basketball roundup: Teams shifting into high gear

Boys

The Harrisburg Hornets hosted the Manila Lions in a 3A-3 conference match up this past Friday. Manila jumped out and early and went on to a 58-40 win. Alec Whitt led the Hornets with 13 points on the night. Manila also won the junior high game 51-38.

Marked Tree lost a heartbreaker this past Friday night as they missed a free throw with no time left to fall 60-59. Allen Buchanan led all scorers on the night with 32 points as Darius Ivy added 10 points. Marked Tree won the junior high game 48-39.

EPC cruised to a 72-29 win over BIC in basketball action this past Friday in Lepanto. Mookie Sturdivant led the Warriors with 19 points as Malik Monk netted 18 points on the night. EPC won the junior high contest 42-37.

Bay rolled past Black Rock 79-42 this past Friday night in basketball action at Black Rock. Tyson Oliver finished with 15 points and 12 assists, Dylan Loven scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Zack Johnson hit five three pointers to finish with 15 points and Tyler Pritchett chipped in 12 points. Bay's junior boys won 60-34 as Taylor Layne had 15 points and Jonathon Crain and Dustin Utley finished with 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Weiner Cardinals evened their record at 12-12 with a 52-45 win over Armorel this past Friday in Weiner. Drake Melton led the Cardinals in scoring with 13 points as Logan Bray added 12 points Armorel won the junior high game 45-36.

Marked Tree and Riverside had to play an extra period this past Tuesday night to settle their basketball game. Marked Tree came out on top with a 69-68 win. Allen Buchanan led the way for Marked Tree with 24 points as Daniel Rucker netted 22 points on the night for the Indians.

Bay continued to roll as they beat Armorel 69-49 this past Tuesday night in Bay. Johnson led the 'Jackets with 14 points and Loven added 13 points on the night. Bay's junior high team got 29 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocked shots from Jonathan Crain as they improved to 29-1 on the year and 10-0 in conference play with a 57-26 win.

Trumann got double-doubles from Grayson Dye and Nathan Maxwell as the Wildcats defeated Westside 67-62 this past Tuesday night in Trumann. Dye finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Maxwell had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Jones led all scorers on the night with 21 points for Trumann. Westside won the junior high game 39-34.

Ayson Lamb and Alec Whitt had 12 points each for Harrisburg but it wasn't enough as the Hornets fell to Manila 54-44 this past Tuesday in Harrisburg. Harrisburg won the junior high game 43-28 as Dallas Hodges scored 17 for the Junior Hornets.

Girls

Weiner's Lady Cardinals wrapped up the 1A-3 conference title this past Friday by downing Armorel 69-49. Hunter Lewis led Weiner with 20 points on the night as Peyton Craft scored 16 points, Jaden Malone 13 points and Kaci Mack 11 points for Weiner. Weiner won the junior high girls' game 40-25.

Harrisburg dropped a 3A-3 conference game to Earle this past Monday night in Harrisburg. Kiley Howton led the Lady Hornets with 13 points on the night. Harrisburg won the junior high game 57-43.

Hannah Willard and Sara Sharp combined for 32 points as the Lady Yellowjackets beat Armorel 49-31 in a 1A-3 conference match up in Bay this past Monday. Willard had 21 points on the night with Sharp tossing in 11 points. Armorel won the junior high game 25-16.

Marked Tree travelled to Maynard his past Tuesday and got 23 points from Poohnu Perry to hand their hosts a 67-36 loss. Lexi Perry added 20 points for the Lady Indians as Diana Harris chipped in 10 points for Marked Tree. Maynard won the junior high game 53-29.
