Indians fall to Rivercrest despite 30 from Buchanan
Allen Buchanan scored 30 points for Marked Tree but it wasn't enough as the visiting Rivercrest Colts posted a 78-68 win this past Tuesday in Marked Tree.
Marked Tree (19-9) opened the game with a 7-0 run as Darius Ivy made a conventional three-point play before Buchanan had back to back slam dunks for the Indians. The Colts responded with a 9-0 run to take a 9-7 lead with 3:52 left in the opening period. Ivy hit a three with 3:38 left giving Marked Tree a 10-9 lead. This would be their last lead of the game. The Colts outscored the Indians 12-3 the remainder of the period to take a 21-13 lead after one period of play.
The teams traded points the first two and a half minutes of the second period as the Colts led 27-19 with 5:30 left. Marked Tree cut it to four as Ivy and Buchanan scored back to back baskets to make it 27-23. Marked Tree got to within two at 30-28 as Kedrick Tyler nailed a three-pointer and Buchanan got free and fed himself a pass off the backboard for a monster slam dunk. Ivy cut the lead to one at 33-32 with a lay up with 1:05 left. The Colts hit a free throw with 49 seconds left to make it 34-32 at the half.
The third period started out the same as the second as the team traded points for the first half of the period as the Colts led 45-42 with 4:26 left. Rivercrest outscored the Indians 10-5 the rest of the period to take a 55-47 lead. Buchanan had seven points in the period.
The Colts opened the final period scoring the first six points to push their lead to 61-47. Freshman D'Angelo Griffin, just called up from the junior high squad, hit a jumper at 6:46 to stop the Colts run and make it 61-49. The Colts reeled off another six points making it 67-49 with 5:34 left. Marked Tree got a conventional three-pointer from Buchanan and a three-ball from the left corner from Griffin to make the score 67-55 Rivercrest. Buchanan and Griffin cut the lead to eight as Buchanan got free for a lay up and Griffin hit another three-ball to make it a 68-60 game. Buchanan got inside for a two-handed slam and Terry Carter hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 68-63 with 2:07 left to play. Rivercrest got back to back scores to push their lead to 72-63 with 1:28 left. Buchanan soared high off an alley-oop pass from Ivy making it 72-65 with just over a minute left. The Indians could only manage a free throw from Ivy and two free throws from Buchanan the rest of the way as the Colts went on to the 78-68 win.
"We didn't rebound well at all tonight," Marked Tree coach Barbara Wilburn said after the game. "Our man to man defense wasn't there tonight, all-around we didn't play a very good game," Wilburn added.
Buchanan led the Indians in scoring with 30 points as Ivy tossed in 12 points for Marked Tree.
