Weiner, Bay cruise to tourney finals
Top-seeded Weiner and second-seeded Bay were both in action last Thursday night as the Lady Cardinals battled Maynard and the Lady Jackets faced out against Armorel with the winners advancing to the finals of the Class 1A-3 East district finals being held at Bay. Bay played the early game and led by three after one before increasing that lead every period on the way to a 66-42 win. Weiner followed in the same fashion as they lead by five after one and went on to a 69-41 win.
Bay (21-8) got 31 points from Willard and Katie Ferguson added 20 points for Bay. Bay led 16-13 after one, 37-26 at the half and 51-34 after three.
"We came out and played well and I thought we had good intensity," Bay coach Chad LaRose said after the game. "We played through a couple bad plays and I was proud of the the effort tonight. Willard and Ferguson both had good offensive games tonight," LaRose added.
The Lady Cardinals (27-9) had four players in double figures as every player on the team got in on the scoring in the night cap.
Weiner had a 15-10 lead after the first, 33-19 at half time and was up 51-29 after three.
Peyton Craft led the Lady Cards with 19 points on the night. Hunter Lewis netted 15 points, Kaci Mack tossed in 13 points and Jaden Malone finished with 11 for Weiner.
"We played smart and were able to stay out of foul trouble tonight," Weiner coach James Halitzka said of this team after the game. "We had balanced scoring on the night as a lot of people stepped up and hit big shots," Halitzka added.
Weiner and Bay will meet for the district title Saturday, February 16.
