Lady Indians advance with win over Augusta
The Marked Tree Lady Indians (21-5) came out of the gates strong against Augusta but had to withstand a fourth quarter push from the Lady Red Devils before posting a 75-67 victory to advance to the semi-finals of the class 2A-3 district tournament being held at Marmaduke.
Marked Tree used three scoring spurts to open up a 17 point lead after the first period. Lexi Perry, Poohnu Perry and Kambria Marshall all had baskets to give the Lady Indians a 6-2 lead two minutes into the game. Marked Tree then used a 12-4 run to go up 18-6 with Dez Reel and Lexi Perry both getting baskets before Poohnu and Diana Harris each connected on back to back three-pointers. Harris added a basket with 1:28 left to finish off the run. Marked Tree closed the period outscoring Augusta 6-1 with Poohnu, Jay Perry and Marshall scoring the last six points of the period with a basket each giving Marked Tree a 24-7 lead.
Marked Tree stretched their lead to 31-10 with 5:15 left in the second period. Lexi Perry and Jay Perry combined to reel off seven straight points as Jay Perry hit a free throw and an inside basket between two Lexi Perry inside scores. Marked Tree pushed the lead to 38-20 before Augusta cut the lead 38-25 with 39 seconds left in the half. Reel got free for a lay up to set our halftime score at 40-25.
The teams traded points the first five and half minutes of the third period making the score 49-37. Marked Tree closed out the third with a 7-0 run to lead 58-37 after three periods of play. Lexi Perry had six points with Reel and Harris both scoring four in the period.
Marked Tree had to withstand a 30 point final period from Augusta to secure the win. The Lady Indians seemed to have an answer each time the Lady Red Devils got close. Augusta cut the lead to 10 by outscoring Marked Tree 16-5 the first half of the period to make it 63-53 with 3:04 left to play. Marked Tree answered with six straight points over the next minute making it 69-53. Augusta responded by scoring the next seven closing the gap to 69-60 with 1:14 left. The teams traded scores the remainder of the game with Marked Tree posting a 75-67 win to advance to the semi-finals.
"We stepped up tonight," Marked Tree coach Derik Drewett said of his team tonight. "Lexi Perry had a good game for us and we had Harris, Reel and Marshall with good games to help us out too," Drewett added.
Lexi Perry led the way with 23 points for the Lady Indians. Poohnu Perry scored 16 points and Harris finished with 13 points for Marked Tree.
Marked Tree faced BIC in the semi-finals last Thursday night falling 54-52 to the Lady Mustangs.
Marked Tree will square off against Pangburn Thursday in the opening round of the Class 2A North Regional Tournament at Sloan-Hendrix.
