Bay holds of Viola in consolation game

Bay played Viola in the consolation game of the Class 1A Regional tournament at Lynn. Bay held on to post a 53-50 win to take the third-seed going into the state tournament at Bradley.

Viola got out to a 5-0 lead before Dylan Loven hit a jumper in the lane to make it 5-2. Loven scored again to make the score 7-4 with 3:32 left in the opening period. Matt Holt nailed a three-pointer before Viola made a basket making it 11-7. Bay closed the period on a 6-0 run to go up 13-11. Holt sandwiched baskets around a Tyler Pritchett score in the run.

Kylor Skaggs made Bay's first two baskets of the second period to keep Bay in the lead at 17-16. Viola went up 19-17 only to see Holt can a three-pointer and Tyson Oliver grab an offensive rebound and put it back in to give the 'Jackets a 22-19 lead. Loven and Zack Johnson hit back to back shots to put up 26-21. Oliver's three-pointer from the left wing sent the teams to half with Bay up 29-23.

Oliver hit a three-pointer to open the third period and put the 'Jackets up 32-23. Loven got inside for a score to make it a 34-25 game. Viola scored back to back baskets making it 34-29 only to see Bay's Oliver and Skaggs score back to back to push the lead back to nine at 38-29. The Longhorns made a conventional three-point play and then hit a three-pointer to make it 38-35 at the end of three.

Loven put Bay up 40-35 before Viola got a basket and another three-point play to tie the game at 40. Pritchett scored inside putting Bay up 42-40 as Viola scored back to back baskets to take a 44-42 lead. Loven scored back to back baskets for Bay wrapped around a Viola score to make it 46-46 with 3:14 left in the game. Viola went up two at 48-46 before Pritchett was fouled making a basket to tie the game back up. Pritchett's free throw put Bay up 49-48. Pritchett scored again and Oliver hit two free throws to make it 53-48. Viloa hit a shot the buzzer to set the final score at 53-50.

"We played kind of timid, like we were playing not to lose instead of playing to win," Bay coach Brad Brannen said after the game. "We have got to get the tempo up and play better defense," Brannen added.

Loven led three Bay players in double figures with 16 points. Oliver and Holt each had 10 points on the night.
