Mayor Nichols honored at Marked Tree Chamber Banquet
In the past, the Marked Tree Chamber of Commerce has given out several awards at their annual banquet. Chamber President Sandy Teague said this year they decided to give out just one, the Award of Excellence, which went to the city's mayor, Wayne Nichols.
"Wayne is a dedicated public servant," Mary Ann Arnold said. "People ask for and respect his opinion. If he says he'll do something, you know he'll come through."
Unfortunately, Nichols was unable to attend the banquet. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and has been undergoing treatment. His nephew, Reverend Pat Tucker, accepted the award on his behalf.
"Uncle Wayne is a man of his word," Tucker said. "He is very committed to what he does. I know he'll receive this award with humility. He's a fine man."
Chamber board member Jeff Bookout gave an update on the chamber's new website markedtreechamber.org. Chris Doyle, who put together the site, said the site has been updated with current pictures and information. He said anyone with pictures can share them with the chamber's facebook page to keep the website updated.
The guest speaker for the evening was ASU Women's Basketball Head Coach Brian Boyer, who is in his 14th year as head coach. He talked about his path toward becoming head coach and the importance of teamwork and community.
