Four to run for mayor in special election

Four candidates have filed to run for the position of Marked Tree mayor in a special election to be held in August.

Mary Ann Arnold, Dixon Chandler, Cleo Johnson, Jr. and James E. Williams have all filed to run for the position. Arnold served as a Justice of the Peace for 22 years, Johnson has served on the city council for 50 years and Chandler is a former mayor of Marked Tree.

The four are running to finish Wayne Nichols' unexpired term as mayor. Nichols passed away on May 5.

Alderman Michael Scott is serving as mayor pro tem until the election. The drawing of ballot positions will be on June 6. Early voting begins Aug. 6 and ends Aug. 12 at the Harrisburg courthouse. The election will be from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 13 at ASU-Newport in Marked Tree.

The Marked Tree Chamber of Commerce and the Marked Tree Rotary Club are planning to have a town hall Q & A session with the candidates. More details will be available when a date for the event is set.
