Marked Tree mayoral runoff approaches
The mayoral election for Marked Tree was held on Tuesday, Aug. 13, but it didn't end there. There will be a runoff from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 at Arkansas State University-Marked Tree. Early voting for the Special Mayoral Runoff began on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and continues through Friday, Aug. 30.
The candidates for mayor are Mary Ann Arnold and Dixon Chandler. In the last election, Arnold received 44 percent of the vote with 296 votes. Chandler received 37 percent of the vote, totaling 250 votes. The two other candidates were Cleo Johnson, Jr., 12 percent, and James Williams, 6 percent. Over 600 residents went to vote that day.
The unexpected vacancy for mayor was created when Mayor Wayne Nichols passed away in May. Alderman Michael Scott is serving as interim mayor until Arnold or Chandler is elected.
