Trumann torched by Junior Blazers in tough loss at home
The Trumann Junior Wildcats (2-4) hosted Valley View last Thursday night in junior high football action at Wildcat Field. The visiting Junior Blazers jumped out to a 16-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as they went on to a 54-20 victory.
Trumann got the ball first to start the game and were forced to punt on their first series with 5:30 left. Valley View took over and wasted little time as they scored their first touchdown of the night with just over four minutes left in the opening quarter. The two-point conversion was good making it 8-0 Valley View. Trumann turned the ball over on downs at their own 35-yard line and the Junior Blazers took advantage by scoring on the first play after the the turnover. The two-point conversion was again good as Valley View extended the lead to 16-0.
The Junior Wildcats got to the board with 3:16 left before half when Garrett Woods found Austin Webb for a 17-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was no good to make it 16-6 Junior Blazers. Trumann tried to onside kick but Valley View recovered the ball. The Junior Blazers struck again with 2:44 left in the second quarter on a touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good again to make it a 30-6 ball game. Trumann looked as if they were going to score again as they drove deep into Valley View territory. Cade Gartman coughed up the ball inside the Junior Blazers 10-yard line with Valley View falling on the loose ball with 1:33 left. Gartman saved a touchdown as he chased down the Valley View runner and knocked him out of bounds at the Junior Wildcats two-yard line as the buzzer sounded ending the second quarter. The teams went to half with Valley View up 24-6.
Trumann again tried to onside kick to start the third quarter but Valley View recovered as their own 48-yard line. The Junior Blazers took less than a minute to find the end zone for another score. The two-point conversion was no good to make it 30-6. The Junior Blazers scored again on a touchdown pass with 1:17 left in the quarter. The two-point try was good to make it 38-6 Valley View. Koltan Jones broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run as time expired in the quarter. Coty Buckner ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 38-14 headed to the fourth quarter.
Garrett Woods broke several tackles and scampered 52 yards for a touchdown for the Junior Wildcats with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion was no good leaving the score at 38-20. Valley View added two more scores with successful two-point conversions to set the final score at 54-20.
"It's been a tough year. We are young, we are starting eight eighth-graders on both sides of the ball," Trumann coach Cody Wallis said after the game. They are getting better and stronger. We are 2-4 with three games left and we want to finish strong," Wallis added.
Cade Gartman led the Trumann rushing attack with 92 yards. Jones and Woods had 67 and 62 yards respectively with a touchdown each. Woods completed one pass for 17 yards and a touchdown. Webb had a touchdown reception.
