Hornets fall to Manila on late basket

Manila converted a conventional three-point play with two seconds left on the clock to claim a 56-53 win over Harrisburg in 3A-3 conference basketball action this past Friday in Harrisburg.

Manila started the game with a 1-0 lead after hitting a technical free throw given to Harrisburg during warm-ups. Manila made it 3-0 with a basket before Drew Price scored inside for Harrisburg to make it 3-2. Manila increased their lead to 6-2 only to see the Hornets get a coast to coast lay up from Ayson Lamb and a stick back off an offensive rebound from Price to tie the game at six. Down 11-6 with 2:08 left, Alex Nicholson scored back to back buckets while being fouled on the second score. Nicholson's free throw was good to make it 11-11 after one quarter of play.

The Hornets opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run to go up 18-13. Price and Nicholson had inside baskets and Brayden Honeycutt nailed a three for the Hornets. Honeycutt canned his second three of the quarter to make the score 21-15 Harrisburg. Manila cut the lead to see before Nicholson hit one of two free throws and then scored an inside basket to put the Hornets up 24-18 with 2:17 left before half. Manila scored the final points of quarter to make it 24-21 Harrisburg at halftime.

The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter with Cade Condra scoring inside for Harrisburg making it 26-23 Hornets. The Lions took a 27-26 lead scoring the next four points before Harrisburg answered with a 9-0 run to go up 35-27. Price scored inside, Honeycutt had back to back baskets with the latter being a three-pointer and Nicholson scored inside to finish the run. Harrisburg stretched the lead to 38-29 after Nicholson scored inside and Honeycutt hit one of two free throws with 2:40 left. Manila ended the quarter with a 8-1 run close the gap to 39-37 Hornets. Jake Chatman scored the Hornets lone point during the Lions run.

The final quarter was five lead changes before the thrilling ending. Nathan Neal hit two free throws for Harrisburg to make it 41-37 Hornets to open the final quarter. Nicholson's inside basket made the score 43-39 Harrisburg with 6:56 to play. Manila hit a jumper and three-pointer to take the lead at 44-43 only to see Price hit a jumper in the lane to give the lead back to Harrisburg at 45-44. Manila's three-pointer put the Lions up 47-45 before Price hit another jumper in the lane for Harrisburg to tie the game at 47. Neal's two free throws tied the game at 49 and Nicholson's basket gave the Hornets a 51-49 lead with 2:04 to play. Manila tied the game at 51 before Neal scored on a lay up to give Harrisburg a 53-51 lead with 1:04 left. Manila tied it at 53 with two free throws with just under a minute left. Harrisburg's Price was called for a charge and the basket negated with six seconds showing on the clock. Manila drove the length of the court and got the blocking call while the ball went in the hoop with two seconds left giving the Lions a 55-53 lead. The free throw was good making it 56-53 Manila. Avery Bise's shot at the buzzer was off mark ending the game.

Nicholson led the Hornets in scoring with 18 points while Price and Honeycutt both had 12 points.
