Lady Warriors hold on for win over Augusta

EPC kept fighting all night and it payed off in the end. In a game that was close all night, the Lady Warriors broke a 57-57 tie with less than 30 seconds left and held on for a 60-57 2A-3 conference win this past Friday in Lepanto.

Synteria Ward opened the scoring with a conventional three-point play being fouled while hitting a jumper for EPC. Ward's free throw made it 3-0. Augusta went up 4-3 before Ward tied the game at 4 hitting one of two free throws. Augusta went up 7-4 before Alyson Phillips hit a jumper for the Lady Warriors to make it 7-6 Lady Red Devils. Ward went coast to coast for a lay up giving EPC a 8-7 lead with 2:22 left. Augusta scored only to see Jaleigha Garrett score inside to give EPC a 10-9 lead after one.

Augusta took a 14-10 lead before Garrett scored inside, Philips hit two free throws and Ward hit one of two free throws before adding a lay up to put EPC up 17-14. The Lady Red Devils scored the next eight points to go up 22-17 with 2:58 before halftime. Garrett hit one of two free throws to make it 22-18 only to see Augusta hit a three to push the lead to 25-18. Ward converted another old-fashioned three point play and added a free throw to make the halftime score 25-22 Augusta.

Ward and Christian Hinson both hit jumpers before Augusta three-pointers to make it 31-26 Lady Red Devils. Hinson scored inside and Ward converted yet another conventional three-point play to tie the game at 31 with 3:45 left. An Augusta three made it 34-31 before the Lady Red Devils were assessed a technical foul. Phillips hit both technical free throws and Ward hit one of two after being fouled to tie the game back up at 34. Phillips' three-pointer after two Augusta scores made it 38-37 headed to the final quarter.

Free throws played a large part of the fourth quarter with a combined 35 being attempted. Garrett hit one of two free throws followed by a steal and lay up by Ward put EPC up 40-38 early in the quarter. Augusta went up 43-40 before Phillips nailed a three-pointer from the right wing to tie the game at 43. The Lady Red Devils went up 46-43 with 4:13 left to play. Bailey Constant hit a running jumper to make it 46-45 and Augusta scored inside to push the lead to 48-45. Constant hit one of two free throws, Augusta made three of four and Garrett hit one of two free throws to make the score 51-47 Augusta. Ward got inside for a score before hitting two free throws to make it 53-51 Lady Red Devils. Ward and Hinson each it two free throws to tie the gam at 55 with 56 seconds left to play. Ward put EPC up 57-56 with a coast to coast lay up before Augusta tied the game at 57 with a free throw. Hinson hit one of two free throws and Ward got two to fall making it 60-57. Augusta's last second shot was off mark giving the Lady Warriors the win.

Ward led EPC in scoring with 31 points. Phillips added 12 for the Lady Warriors.
